Welcome Marion, what a boss you are to both, remember that Secretary's Day is Wed. 22nd (hint, hint for you others) and make her a banner. If you are using a "Ready-made" banner and want to modify the text, simply move the mouse pointer to where you want to start modifying and click once and start typing. To delete what is there, just press the Delete key to delete to the right of the cursor and Backspace to delete to the left. Hope this helps….Larry

Welcome Lyn, and not to worry we shall find your lost updated file. (This procedure will also work on any "missing" files). On the bottom left corner you will see the Start button. Left-click on this Start and then Find and to the right Files and Folders. You will now have a window named "Find: All Files" and in the small horizontal box (Named) type in "pmupd32.exe" (without the quotes), as this is the file we are looking for this time. It will show you where the file is located (path) and then open Windows Explorer, scroll to the file location and double left-click and the program will find your PrintMaster folder and execute itself and you will be "upgraded"…Hope this helps…Larry

Oh Maurice. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation on how to use the translator. Yes, it makes perfect sense. Now I understand why Michael had such a good laugh as he entered one of my reinking posts into Spanish. Your comments about the Dutch language really peaked my interests. I'd always noticed in my travels that listening to the intonation of the Dutch language sounded quite similar to our English intonation in the states. Cheers. Jill

Hi Gill, all "mechanical" (as opposed to "human") translators do it literally, that is word for word, rather than what I always did as an interpreter, translate and interpret the "sense." This is very true of ideomatic expressions. If you say in English "I got a kick out of it," it doesn't mean that you recived an actual kick in the pants from it. It just means "it amused me to a high degree." So, never give those ideomatic expresions to a translation program, because it will produce a howler in the other language. Keep you sentences straight, without any figurative meaning. It will translate rather well sentences like "I will send you an e-mail tomorrow with more information about this subject." Especially the German translation is very advanced, in that it changes the word order correctly. When you say in English "Yesterday I was at the supermarket with my husband," the correct word order in German is "I am yesterday with my husband at the supermarket been." It does that correctly, but again, no figurative speech. I was involved once in producing a translation program for Dutch-English and vice versa. The thing had about 50,000 lines of code already, and we still ran into ideomatic expressions in either language that needed some shaving here and there. But it was remarkable and, to first time users, uncanny in its ability to interpret complex ideas. But you have to take into account that Dutch and English are two closely related languages, with the same Germanic roots, lots of intermingling over the ages. They are both North Sea languages that are sprinkled heavily with maritime expressions or derivations thereof. Now try to make a program that translates from and to Japanese, for example, two radically different cultures and you are bound to run into unsurmountable difficulties. So, to sum it up, keep the sentences simple and don't use any figurative speech in them. Then the program does a commendable job. Maurice.

Afternoon Myra, and congratulations on your purchase. I have enjoyed PA as it came up through the ranks with even another name (way back) as Instant Artist for those who are into nostalgic type stuff. Great program and you will find (as with all programs) that EACH has its strong and weak points for doing things. Best Buy and CompUSA can (will with rebates) out-do our favorite COSTCO store and carry a greater variety of software. I personally purchased CreataCard GOLD 2 for (after rebates) $24 which makes it a better buy (more graphics/cards) than the PLUS 2 version sold at COSTCO and Sunday's newspaper inserts may have it again……IMO hold out for the GOLD 2…...Larry

Why Peter. I'm sitting here staring at one of my ten reams. One can never have enough of it. Card stock is purchased in this country at big office supply stores like Office Depot. Some folks have reported that you can buy card stock at printers' shops for even better prices. The package specs reads...... Hammermill (the brand...one of many) 81'2 " X 11 S65 (176 g/m). It appears to be the same weight as store-purchased greeting cards. Sometimes it is referred to as "Index Stock" like the small index cards used in college when you prepare a speech. In this country the stock colors are spectacular. Hope that helps. Jill

Card stock is just heavy paper. It does not have score lines to help in folding. I prefer the 67# weight, called Medium Coverweight on the package, because it is a little easier to fold than the 90 weight. In addition to white, the Ivory shade makes a nice card. There is also a heavier 110#. Any office supply store should carry it. The type I usually find around here, midwest USA, is made by WAUSAU Papers.

Hi Donna. Yes, I'm another happy Gateway customer and have the HP 5P scanner hooked up to it. Eleanor is very correct about the IRQ situation. After the initial pains of getting the thing to run in a compatibile fashion with the computer, everything has been smooth sailing. It is definitely not a "plug and play" device. It took my computer genius hours to set it up. I do believe HP now has a quick fix for the set up problem but do ask about that if it becomes your scanner of choice. Actually, ask about that for any scanner because it can be deceiving. The HP5P is a fine work horse and is worth the money. If you live near a COSTCO, check out the price. It seems to me I saw it recently for $279. It was selling last year for $450. Jill

Hi, Myra. Well, the computerworld is full of XYZ shortenings, which can all sound like greek. There sure is a lot of image file formats and regarding the bitmap ones, you did list some of the major and most common ones. The reason for that there are so many is that different ones have their own advantages and disadvantages. Don´t think there is an ideal one for all purposes. BMP was used originally by Windows Paintbrush, TIFF (with .TIF extension) and PCX are some other common ones. GIF´s and JPEG´s are used mainly nowadays in Web graphics. I shall not go into detail abt. this, it would be too lengthy and don´t think you have to worry abt. it too much. If you come around to it and buy a picture editing program, or if you already have done this, ea image file format is dealt with individually in the manual, I´m sure. Have a nice weekend, Myra. Hi Everybody - I'd say "Morning" but here in Maryland it's 3:55 p.m Hey Maurice I found Costco!! I'm almost embarrassed to tell you it turns out that there is one less than 5 mi. from me! You know how you ride by someplace a lot and you never notice it! The building is next to the Home Depot I go to a fairly often but it used to be Price Club but I had never shopped there!Well, I rode up to the Price Club and guess what! It's a Costco now! Not only joined, but got the Fiskars 12" trimmer with the four blades!! Hey Jill they had the HP890 printer for $379.00! I started towards it and my "significant other" grabbed my arm! We've done a whole lot of renovating on the house lately and need to finish paying off some bills, so he figured not giving me a hard time about buying the Fiskars was the lesser of two evils!(Fiskars was $37.99) I could have spent the whole day in that place! We're going back tomorrow to shop. They also had two different packages of the decorative "scissors". Three scissors with a different blade on each pair for $9.95 a box. Hmmmm, might try to slip one or two in the grocery cart tomorrow! Boy that HP kept saying, "hey Lee, hey Lee"!!

Guess my ol'pal Sandi is getting me out of my "lurkdom" mode. To make the old pad look new you need cotton fabric in a print, solid, PMG picture, or a scanned image on fabric, and a paper-backed fusible such as "trans-web"or "Wonder-Under". Tip your pad upside down on the paper and trace around it. Cut leaving at least 1/2" all around. Iron the fusible to the wrong side of your fabric. Follow the instructions that come with it regarding the temp of the iron. Peel off the paper and lay the fabric rightside up on the top of the mouse pad and iron it on. Turn the pad over and trim the access fabric with your rotary cutter or scissors. Have fun. Juanita

To my knowledge, there is no way of changing the degree of drop shadow - at least through the effects menu. The way that I USED to do it, before discovering the Effects menu, was to just Duplicate the Text I wanted a drop shadow with, highlight it, then change the color of the duplicate to what color shadow I wanted, move it behind the original text in whatever 'drop' you would like. If this isn't clear enough let me know.

You mentioned, Donna, that you have a Gateway computer. So do we and we, too, think it's great. However, if you are getting a scanner with a SCSI card to install be very sure that there is an IRQ slot available on your computer between 7 and ll. Otherwise, choose a scanner with a Parallel Port connection, the easiest way to go. We have a Microtek E6 which came originally with the SCSI card that I mentioned and we found out the hard way that it just wasn't possible to install on our computer. They did send us a parallel port connector that works very well and we would highly recommend it. Good luck with your search. Eleanor

Morning, Jill. Pls use the translator with caution. I have tried it a couple of times and it seems to be able to cope with simple "tourist-type" of sentences, but for more advanced or special words, you can easily get a good laughter from the translation. So, it can be a lot fun too, that´s not too bad, is it? Actually, this is more Maurice´s department, but I think he would basically agree upon that translating a language is very difficult to automate, you have to use the head also. Good Morning Melissa, I have no intention of letting you hang. We have a long battle ahead of us. The goal is for you to be able to include whatever you want in an E Mail. To get there we are going to need some help from others who use communicator. I use IE4.0 and it works different. I know it can be done with communicator just don't know specifically what buttons to push. Frank sends me stuff all the time and Daisy uses it. Larry said he is off to the car show. Frank is gone for the weekend. I have to go do some work and will be back this evening. Between this group We WILL get you up to speed. NEVER GIVE UP. It will happen.

Hi, Daisy, Michael and everyone else. Thks for the input. Yeah, I do know abt. the format font and effects windows. Have tried it out w/o success. In the effects window, I can select outline style as well as color for outline and any change is immediately reflected in the preview window, same w/ shadow effects. But when I select fill pattern (whichever pattern, solid or other) and choose color for the filling, nothing happens (well, a little blinking of the font in the preview window, but that´s all). Also, if I select OK and come back to the workspace, there is also no filling done. I use in this case the Cooperblack font, but I think which outline font has nothing to do w/ it. Any ideas, anyone? Maybe I have some corrupted files? Do you get filling of color or pattern in the preview effects window? Pls adv. Peter :>)

Communicator is not up to IE's level in a lot of departments and IMO this is another one of them.<G> Just have her locate her "picture folder" (or wherever she has her pics) and "attach." If her recipient has an HTML enabled browser then they will see the picture right after the message text…..Hope this helps, friend.....Jill, good morning and did we find our pics in Calendar Creator?

Morning Daisy, Unless you wish to purchase a program called Partition Magic (or similar program) the only way to partition your hard drive is to "fdisk" through DOS and of course this means you will be reformatting and hence lose what you have unless you have backups to your data. I personally like my drives NOT partitioned as I do not like that way of organizing. Instead I recommend that folks just make FOLDERS for various categories….If you wish I could go into much more detail….Larry

Hello Melissa. Watch out. You might start to orbit soon! Told you you'd have fun. Can't stop, right! Well, now. Don't pay those high prices for card paper. You know the kind that comes twenty to a box, white and starts with the letter A. The price is at least $10. Better to invest in something called CARD STOCK. It comes in every color of the rainbow and then some. Only costs about $6 for a ream of 250 sheets. Once you find card stock, you'll never pay high prices again. Save your ink-jet-coated paper (the expensive stuff Glenn is talking about) for good photos. You can also purchase glossy paper but that is also for your good photos. I make calendars using card stock and insert photos with good results. When you are using colored card stock, remember that your colored inks will be changed by the color of the card stock. Only use the very pale colored stock if you plan to use colored ink. Otherwise, your black on a beautiful colored stock will make a fantastic card and be very pleasing to the eye. Cut the edges of your stock with the Fiskars rotary trimmer using Victorian blade or something cute and there you have it! Now, don't overload your circuits! At the rate you are learning, you'll soon be in the "expert" category. Cheers. Jill

Scanning would be better and multitasking other things would increase. Hi Larry, the blade sharpener that I have is only good for the straight blades. Works great. If you are refering to the "mats" I have had mine forever. Olfa and Fiskars make them in several sizes, I have both brands and other than the color of the mat don't notice any difference. I actually prefer the mats over the fiskars paper cutter I just bought. You must keep them on a flat surface, I hang mine on the wall when not in use. I use mine for just about every cutting job I have from fabric to card stock. You can also flip them over and use either side. Pressing to hard when cutting can cause scoring marks but I have never had a problem with this at all. Hope this helps. Sandi

Hello Donna, You didn't say what printer you are filling cartridges for. Like Michael said the spoonges are inside the cartridge and you never see them. If the refill holes are on the top they can be left open. Or taped and a small hole put in the tape, it has to vent. To do a good job you need at least a 10 cc syringe (smaller will be ok)and a #20 needle,a sharp one that will go in the spoonge easily, There is absolutely no reason for spilling even one drop of ink. You just stick the needle in all the way and slowly, slowly inject the ink.If ink is dripping out when you are through let it set on a paper towell (several layers ) until it stops. If you top off before you run out of ink it will work right away and there will be no need for cleaning cycles.

Hello Sharon with "too many fonts".<G> What I would recommend is to create another folder in the C drive, Windows directory called FONTS2 which will position it directly under your present FONTS directory. (The Fonts directory is a subfolder under Windows directory.) "Drag and drop" your "extra" fonts into this new folder. If you are familiar with Explorer, I would recommend you go to View - Options - View tab and click on "show all files". This will show you all font files with their "extensions". MAKE SURE you do not remove the files that have a .fon for an extension as windows needs these fonts to operate correctly. Windows looks at the Fonts directory upon bootup and will not see the Fonts2 directory, BUT you will still have those fonts which may make up some projects you already have made and you can "drag and drop" them back into the main Font folder if necessary without trying to figure out where they originally came from. Hope this helps….Larry

Fonts - 800?! wow! Just don't remove any MS fonts or fonts whose icon has a red A. The others are fairly safe. If I delete New Zurica, Print Shop asks for it when I open it. The same for Tahoma with MSWord. Start by deleting the variations, Italic, Bold, Extra Bold, etc. It is usually safe to delete the other True Type fonts. You could leave them in the recycle bin for awhile or move them to a different folder where they won't load them everytime Windows starts until you are sure you don't need them. With that many fonts you could get an Out of Memory error in some programs.***** Scanner - Donna - Mine is a Microtek V300. They have newer models now.(Don't they always? ha ha) They also have SCSI scanners. It was very easy to set up and get used to using. No Gateway, I just got an IBM PII last month.
