Please computer wizes come to my rescue!!! I tried downloading and replacing the most recent driver for my ensoniq sound card on the net today. It successfully removed my old version, then froze the entire system up after installing about 26% of the new driver. I am still mostly a newbie with sort of stuff, and would really appreciate some sage advice as I have no sound at all now. Thank you in advance, Gretchen

Subject: System slowdown <Darah>

Mahalo Darah… There are usually two generic causes for slowdown: either something has changed gradually over time to cause the slowdown, or there has been an abrupt hardware or software change that is responsible for it. Have you checked for viruses lately? Check the processor to make sure it is not overheating, and make sure the CPU fan is still running. Some CPUs, especially OverDrive processors, will intentionally slow the CPU down if they detect a failed fan, in order to prevent heat buildup. Double-check all BIOS options to make sure nothing has been changed from what it should be. Look at cache and memory timings, and hard disk modes. Verify against your last BIOS settings backup. Sometimes people accidentally change a parameter when they are trying to modify something else in the BIOS. Viruses can also change BIOS settings, (but rarely). Try defragmenting the hard disk. If you have not run defrag in a while, file fragmentation can lead to slowdown. You might also look in the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and see how many other programs are starting up automatically when you boot up your machine. (Your system resources might be to low and is not related to physical RAM.) Check the free space on your “C” hard drive. In particular, if you have set Win 95 to dynamically resize the swap file, and you let C drive get too full, Win 95 will shrink the size of the swap file and this can cause slowdown problems. Keep us posted as to what you are trying and how you are coming along. Mahalo … Larry

There's a new product out by XaosTools ("chaos tools") called FlashBox, that sells for $45. It allows you to do basic retouching, such as removing wrinkles, etc. And special effects, like removing/adding individuals, changing backgrounds, and such. It also comes with FlashXubes ("flash cubes") in various themes, that have cut outs where you can insert your own photos. New FlashXube designs will be available for download from their site (www.xaostools.com) each month. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? A Xaos rep called me and was very excited about this title, saying that it might even appeal to professional photographers who want to experiment with digital imaging, but who don't want to invest the time and money into learning Photoshop.

Rick.. You also might want to check with your local PC User’s Group, for folks who use PrintMaster. A lot of groups have SIG’s (Special Interest Groups) that just deal with a specific topic/program and take turns meeting at each other’s homes for the purpose of learning/sharing of ideas and information. The exchange is phenomenal and the camaraderie is exceptional. You might check your local paper/phone book, for places, times, dates of meetings and folks to contact. As a former president and current member of a local User’s Group, I can emphatically endorse them as a great resource for information and help… Larry

I just create and save the cut-outs in PSD and work with them there. After adjusting a photo behind one I use the export feature to export the entire image as a JPEG (other file formats available to choose from) and open that file in a PrintMaster project. Sure, it takes a little more file manipulation, but I am not into professional photo enhancement so it doesn't make sense for me to purchase a $500 program.

Hi Adele, I have copied the program CD to the hard disk on several computers. But it requires about 670 MB of free hard disk space. But that will still require you to shuffle graphics disk, of course, in PMP. ---- To make an outline box on a card, just click on the rectangular shape tool and drag out out to where you think it looks good. It will be completely black. But, with the handles (black dots) still around the rectangle, click on the paint icon and click on NONE. The rectangle will become transparent. (you can give it any color, though) Now you may successively click on the icons below the paint can to adjust the line width, line color, shadow, and so on. Now drag a text frame inside the rectangle and enter your text. Maurice.

Hi Daisy, you say that Photo Deluxe is about 1/10th of the price of Photoshop. True. But when you save a file in Photo Deluxe, the extension is PDD as opposed to Photoshop where it is PSD. Could you please tell us how you convinced PMG to import a PDD file when my version accepts only a PSD file? If you go the COPY (or CUT) & PASTE route, the cut-out is WHITE, not TRANSPARENT, as it should be to make it a fun photo. Maurice.

Hi Joann….Hmmm, well, ah, let’s see. Technically speaking “you will need written permission from the artist or owner of the graphics, even if you alter the picture beyond recognition”. In this case Mindscape, in the case of say Disney cartoons/graphics, it would be Disney, etc. Would have to have a determination made by Mindscape to say whether or not you could legally SELL or make money from the works of others. Might have to check with Customer support to get the LEGAL answer to your question. (I know what generally goes on in the real world is a bit gray). I’m sure we would all like to know what Mindscape feels in this area. Funny it never came up before. Larry

Hi Frank - glad I was able to help. That stupid scroll bar does get pretty darn annoying. When its back to normal, another way to save individual posts is to create a Word File called Printmaster Tips (or whatever) and keep it open when you are reading through the board. when you see something you want to save for future reference, just COPY that particular post and PASTE it into Word. If you keep it all in the same file you can use Word's (or any word processor probably)FIND feature to look for a particular subject - Re-inking, for instance. Have fun...

Hi everybody, I don't know if you have noticed, but PMG leaves a lot of clutter behind when it executes. It is supposed to delete temporary files when it closes each time, but sometimes it doesn't. While it was Saturday I decided it to be a cleanup day and brought out WindowDOS, a new Windows 3.x & 95 sort of Explorer, much easier to use than Explorer itself. I discovered about 13 MB worth of clutter files in C:\PMW, worth to delete and regain that disk space. The files are easily recognizable. They all have the form "~000I79" or "~000U10" and because they all start with "~" they can be found at the end of all the files in C:\PMW, if you use alphabetical sorting. Have fun with your weekly cleanup. Maurice.

Have not seen the lines thru messages that several people have mentioned nor the bottom scroll bar. I'm using Netscape Communicator. Also have TLC Calendar Creator and love the program. One of my concerns with TLC aquiring Mindscape is the possibility of losing this board. It is one that I visit often, have learned greatly from and would really hate to lose it. Is there someone and/or place to send a message to to let them know how much this site is appreciated and would greatly be missed if this were to happen. Feel like I have made several friends here and don't want to lose them. Sandi

But I did recently buy a scanner and Adobe PhotoDeluxe came with it. I found I could copy bitmaps to that program and it puts handles on it. I rotate the picture and then copy and paste it back to where I want it .Hope this helps.

I've heard people on this chat complaining about the limited version of PhotoEnhancer that's included in PM. I've never used it because I own Photoshop 4, but that's a $550+ program. There are consumer versions, like PhotoDeluxe, PhotoEnhancer, etc., that sell for around $50. Got a special offer in the mail yesterday, to buy MGI PhotoSuite 8.0 at half price; just $24.95! The shipping charge is around $10, but that's still a bargain. To order, call 1-888-MGI-SOFT and refer to priority code PS135, special offer from Mystic Photo Lab. This offer expires on July 31, 1998. If you want to convert images from TIFF to JPEG or GIF, this will do it for you, among other things. For further info on what this program can do, visit www.mgisoft.com.

Hello Carol… The patch corrects some annoyances in text and a few more that are undocumented in 4. And early versions of Platinum 4. To check on the version number you presently own please go the the file menu at the top of the program and click on “Help” and “About PMW….” (This works in all windows programs). If you are current it will say 4.01.33, if not do the patch download and follow these directions: To down load it just double click on the “free PrintMaster 4.01 patch” at the top of this forum. This will take you to the download site http://www.mindscape.com/cgi-bin/open?service/updates/pmaster4.htm, which gives you the option of whether you want the Win 95 or Win 3.1 version. Click on the one that is appropriate for your operating system. A window will pop-up (depending on your browser) and ask whether you want to save to disk and you will pick a “save to place” of your choice (read: anywhere you will be able to find it again). Once downloaded just click on the exe file and it will find your installed PrintMaster on any drive you have installed it on and self-install. Enjoy and welcome to Printmaster user’s forum. Once it is in the Word Processor you can adjust the size of the text or even make it BOLD if you want, and NO SCROLL BAR!

Hello Gary…PrintMaster 5 is in development as we speak and no official release date has been given. Now with the recent acquisition things could have changed even more and Doc Maurice feels it’s for the betterment. IMO the rebates in the store work if on box and yes it has been sold retail with a rebate for less. (Check expiration dates) Usually depends on other product’s selling prices at the time, (with their rebates). Sunday paper insert adverti#$%!ts usually tell the tale for the best prices and stores like CompUSA and Best Buy will have similar prices and discounts. Good luck and keep us posted. Doug, if you know how to get to the start menu, (assuming you have win95) it's easy to disable the calendar. I would do a right click on the taskbar, then click properties. Go to the start menu tab and click on remove. Then find the "start up" listing and click the + next to it. You'll see the calendar listing as well as anything else you have that starts when you start the computer. Just click on the calendar listing and then click on remove. If you ever decide you need it again, you can also find the shortcut in the printmaster listing on the main menu

1.) Ok, Frank, now we can start bugging you about "have you downloaded NC Yet?" :-) 2.) Has anyone here tried Pegasus Mail? 3.) Two Mother's Days past I made a full year calendar for my mom using PM3. I designed my own, putting graphics in the heading area appropriate for each month and put in the body the special days of all the family members on their dates along with an appropriate graphic (birthday cake, bride & groom) marked each holiday with a graphic too.I printed it on heavy paper, punched holes in the top of all pages, put clear reinforcement stickers around the holes, and put through some rings which I bought at an office store. She loved it. A week later she asked me buy her a copy of the program as it was not available in her area and this year we upgraded together to PMG4. For Christmas she made calendars for all the ladies in her prayer group and they were very impressed. I assembled mine the way I did as I know my mom does not like to hang a calendar, but likes to be able to flip the pages all the way over for each month and also didn't put on a full page graphic so she could easily see appts. and such that she would write in on the dates. Just thought I'd share a PM idea for a change since that's what brought us all together.

It seems to that there is, in fact, a reason for the “shrike through” problem here, and I think I know what it is. It may even be the cause of the “horizontal scroll bar problem” which has reappeared for me now. When you guys post messages, your input is converted to HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) format, and appended to the file that your browser downloads - the file that you are viewing now. A browser’s interpretation of the HTML language treats the “greater than” and “less than” characters in a special way, and if you include them in your post, strange things can happen, depending on which browser you are using to view this file. There is a “fix” for this, but I don’t work at Mindscape in that area; I will try to get it done. In the mean time, the short term solution is to NOT USE THOSE CHARACTERS (unless you are an anarchist, and like to screw things up) in your messages! In the long term, we can fix this on our end. Maurice has decided to announce the fact that we have been acquired by another company - this is true. During such an event, changes are inevitable. If you like this forum, as I do, now is the time to be heard! Ask that this bulletin board continue! I think it is a great way for the makers, and the users, of PrintMaster to come together to make great software. After all, what would Maurice do without us? I don’t know what “The Learning Company” thinks. God save the Queen...

Jill…GREAT job with the transparencies!!! I’m always glad to hear about successful projects, especially with one of my favorite programs…PM. Glad the conference went well and can relate, was in the teaching profession myself. As far as the cartridges are concerned leave the bottom hole taped and the top hole open to vent to the atmosphere. If that does not work we can “burp” it by a somewhat messy method using centrifugal force to force the ink to saturate the sponge. Did any of your black cartridges work out for you?

Hi Frank… You are right about IE 4 vs. Netscape Communicator 4. The controversy sometimes reminds me of those long ago high school days of Ford vs. Chey. IMO, whatever works best for you. Like scanners and printers, for instance, I WHOLEHARTEDLY agree with Doc Maurice about SCSI scanners being less trouble and HP printers being very good with easy refilling capabilities (you also get new print-heads with each cartridge). Having dealt with many PC’s and related peripherals myself, you get a “feel” (and preference) for certain brands (types) of components, software, browsers, etc. Stick with what works for you, (but be open to try others). .Larry

Hi Larry....I've been in San Diego at the state mentor teacher conference doing a presentation. I took those wonderful overheads I made with Platinum. People were asking where they could purchase them. I had to chuckle. The artwork was so appropriate for the subject. At that point I probably could have made a commission from the company. I'm sure their sales went up that day anyway. How about a reinking question? After you fill the Epson cartridge, you suggested letting it sit overnight in the paper cup. Is that without tape on either the top or bottom holes? Sometimes I have a problem with the cartridge leaking from the bottom in that position without tape. Will this dry out the cartridge? Thanks.

Also, don't let that cartridge sit around after you've taken it out of the printer. Have all tools ready to go and jump right in. It's quite exciting when the process actually does work because you don't have to worry about whether the project warrants the ink. You can even make mistakes and not be wasteful. This way there will be more exposure of their excellent programs. And a more powerful company, money-wise, can only benefit the further development of new and better programs and upgrades. --- And no, I have installed Eudora, Netscape 3.0 and 4.04 and EI and I never saw strike-throughs.
