Hi, All. Where's a good site to d/l fonts where you can view them w/o d/ling 2 or 3 thou. Did a net search, (font + free ) came up w/78,000 and change. Good Grief, Charlie Brown! (Thanx, Charles Schultz). Managed to get through about 30, before Mickey Mouse Modem shut me down. Spare me the comments on IE40, Glenn. Conned Computer Renaisance out of a new modem, being installed tomorrow. Later, Frank 8-)>

I too have a Microtek scanner on a parallel port, the v300. Bought it just before the E6 came out (figures), but it was only $149. Works GREAT. I was going to install a new parallel port just for it and ran into the same problem with the IRQ. Seems they only give you so many and I had already used the only free one on a zip/zoom SCSI for my Zip drive. I thought it was because of my 'antique' P75 machine. Guess I'll have to ask about IRQ's when I buy my new computer this year.

Maurice is right about the Fulton Web Page for scanning info. Wayne's book is also excellent for beginners and advanced. We bought the Microtek E6 at a great discount from Computer Discount Outlet -- don't remember the URL but they do have a Web page. Cost was $283 and there is a $60 rebate that you download from the Microtek Web site. Like the scanner very much although we weren't able to use the SCSI card and they had to provide us with a Parallel Port cable. It works just fine with our printer on the same port. We have a Gateway Pentium II computer and couldn't get the company to tell us how to free the IRQ that was necessary for the SCSI installation. Won't bore you with the details but we had a horrendous time trying to do just that with various suggestions and it ultimately led to us having a "crash" that took hours, even days, to reinstall the original programs with Gateway's supervision. Learned a great deal from that one!!

Well, for a newbie, guess I'm making a pest out of myself. :-) One last question (I think). I just downloaded several graphics from the WWW and saved them on 3.5 disk. The ext. is "art" rather than BMP, GIF, etc. I began a PM project and tried to upload the graphic I had just downloaded and got a clear screen, and nowhere can I find an ext. for "art". Do I need to convert the files? HELP! I'd like to use at least one of the graphics. Thanks! :-)

Hi, Amy. Welcome to the chat room. Disk 1 contains the program files, and the "thumbnails" of most of the graphics in the program. Most of the actual graphics are on the Arts & Projects (#2) disk. When you call up a graphic that is on the #2 disk, you will get a message telling you to insert that disk. Keep disk #1 handy tho, you'll be asked to re-insert it. The difference between 4.0 and Platinum, is more disks, thus more graphics. Hope this helps, Frank 8-)>

Dan. Should say somewhere on the mail in card when the offer expires. A word of caution tho, before you rush to the P. O., or pick up the phone to order, I would check the "shelf" price, @ a retailer near you. There have been many postings here of people sending for the offer, and later finding the same product on the shelf for less money! Don't bother checking out OfficMax, their price is usually the same as the offer, plus you'll have to pay your state's and/or city's sales tax. PM doesn't collect sales tax from every state. Hope this helps, Frank 8-)> P.S. got booted out when I tried to post this, it may come up twice.

Each color of ink is a separate cartridge (no wasting of unused portions). They also have a "white" ink and "metallic" inks for the model 1000. You can request sample printouts and literature. Evening Dale…Double click on the “free PrintMaster 4.01 patch” at the top of this forum. This will take you to the download site http://www.mindscape.com/cgi-bin/open?service/updates/pmaster4.htm, which will then give you the option of whether you want the Win 95 or Win 3.1 version. Click on the one that is appropriate for your current operating system. A window will pop-up (depending on your browser) and ask whether you want to save to disk and pick a “save to place” of your choice. Once downloaded just click on the exe file and it will self install. Enjoy and welcome to Printmaster user’s forum.

Albert, Welcome to the PM chat room. Need to know what kind of problems you are having, before they can be addressed. We are all users here, like yourself, and a pretty friendly bunch. We're not Tech Support. We help one another solve problems w/PM, and occasionally you'll find a tip or shortcut someone has discovered on their own. Lots of PM well versed people here. Post any of your problems any time, someone will usually have a solution. If you haven't already done so, the first thing you need to do is read your manual, and do some of the tutorials. I know, boring and time consuming, but......., as you learn the program you'll soon be answering questions yourself. Jump in with a question any time. Later, Frank 8-)>

To the person whose name keeps getting censored: I didn't ever see an answer to your question about multi-page newsletters, but I have printed catalogs, handbooks, etc. up to 30 pages long. I usually find that my resources are low and the text starts getting garbled, so I have to nudge the text box on each page to correct that, but then it prints fine. What good would a 1 page newsletter be? How would that be different from a poster? That was silly advice they gave you! Lynn

Then you can make the font larger if you want to make it more readable and it DOESN'T scroll off the screen! My eyes get tired enough reading all this stuff without making my font even smaller than it is already! Hope this helps someone out till they fix the blasted scroll bar. Robin…Was it you that had the HP 722 printer? If so, some model HP’s have switch on the printer that changes the position of the print head and adjusts the input rollers to accommodate the continuous paper roll. For the HP 700 series printers for instance you would 1. Slide the banner switch up until it clicks into position. (The banner switch is located on the left side of the printer output tray). The green light above the switch will turn on.2. Check that you have enough banner paper to print your banner. (You need a minimum of five pages in the stack for the printer to properly pick up your paper). 3. Carefully tear off the perforated edge strips from both sides of the paper stack, if there are any. Unfold and then refold the paper to make sure the pages do not stick together. (FYI If you use HP Banner Paper, there are no perforated edges to remove.) <g> 4. Remove all paper from the IN drawer, and then position the stack of banner paper so that the torn edge is at the top of the stack. Insert the stack edge-first into the IN drawer until it stops. 5. Slide the paper-width and paper-length adjusters in until they stop at the edges of the paper. 6. In the HP 700 Series printer driver properties settings, choose the Setup tab. In the Paper Size box, choose either Letter or A4, select the Banner button, and choose OK. 7. Print your banner. After the banner is printed, if the Resume light is blinking, press the Resume button as many times as necessary to fully eject the paper into the printer's OUT tray. One sheet is ejected each time you press the Resume button. 8. After finishing, be sure to set the banner switch back down. The green light above the switch will turn off. FINISHED…good job!

Have been reading about the ALPS 2300 printer don't think I would want one Here is the bottom line at PC Mag.The Alps MD-2300 is an inexpensive continuous-tone printer, but you may be better served by an ink jet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3-ppm legal-capable four-color Micro Dry/thermal dye printer. Resolution: 600 dpi standard, 1,200 by 600 dpi maximum. Tested configuration: $750 street OH, and they use ribbons instead of cartridges. Print quality varies. I can't imagine contending with 4 seperate ribbons. On ZD Net it says the Epson Stylus 800 runs it a close second for half the price.

February 28, 1998 (2:00 PM PDT)

Hi Donna..I think I speak for all of us who ask and answer questions, you are most welcome, and thanks for asking about HP reinking. All of the HP 800 series printers are amongst the easiest cartridges to refill. Only the FIRST refilling on the black 51645A cartridge can be troublesome in that the original OEM ink and the refill are not totally compatible. By that I mean you will sometimes get some “foaming” and hence air bubbles and streaking during printing. Cure #1 is to rinse the cartridge out with water before refilling with non-OEM ink or #2 you print out a heavy black graphic or two to use up the mixed ink. Due to the nature of these cartridges you refill the black from the bottom and the colored from the top. It is best with ALL printers to refill BEFORE the ink runs out or shortly thereafter. The ink acts as coolant and when you get low (out) of coolant, the resistors overheat and breakdown sooner. This is why I recommend “topping off” your cartridges after 250 sheets (half ream) and how some folks get more refillings between replacements than others. Hope this helps and happy refilling (reinking).

Subject: Screen colors
User's IP Address: 152.201.78.185
February 28, 1998 (9:02 AM PDT)

Hi Nicole....The screen colors are always more vibrant than what is printed. If, however, you are thinking you are printing red and the printed color turns out orange or purple or something else, then you have to check your printer manual to determine what to do. When installing my printer, I seem to remember going through a color alignment procedure. I also did this with the scanner set-up. This helped make sure the colors were as close to the screen as possible. If your problem is simply one of having a lighter printout out, there are buttons to click on to make sure the colors print darker. There are also changes that can be made to your printer setup. Make sure you are not printing in "Economy" mode, for example as opposed to "High." Every printer is a bit different. A good way to know how your printmaster colors will look is to print up a sheet using some of the colors you frequently use. This way you can have a better idea of what the printout will look like when you are selecting the colors yourself. There are many folks on this chat board that understand the inner workings of printers. For a more detailed explanation, give the name and model of your printer. I'm sure someone will respond with specifics.

Hi Nicolle, it could be that one of the colors on your tri-color cartridge is empty. It would check this in a systematic way. I would put a series of small rectangles on a poster page. I would give each rectangle a different color, like black, blue, red, green, yellow and so on. Then I would print that. It will be easy to find out if a color is missing this way. Save that poster for future use. Maurice.

It print with dry ink at an unbelievable number of DPI, simply astronomical. I needed a magnifying glass to discern the difference between its output and a regular photographic print. But is the printer durable mechanically? I don't know. It prints on any ordinary paper. But how much does the ink cost per print? I don't know either. Check it out. Maurice.

Hi Chris & Renée, it is very easy to import your own graphics into the Art Gallery. Open the Art Gallery. Make sure all combo windows contain the word ALL. The search window should be blank. Click on FILE and IMPORT. Browse for the directory your pictures are stored in. Hold down the CNRLT key while you click on each file name. You can preview each picture this way. If you don't like it, just click on it a second time, but keep your finger on the CNTRL key all the time. If you have a whole series of pictures you want to import, still holding down the CNTRL key, drag the mouse over all the file names. The file names will be highlighted. Click on IMPORT. A new category called YOUR OWN is now generated (if you don't have it already) in the ART COLLECTION. If you now click on any thumbnail and then on FILE and PROPERTIES you can add keywords to that particular picture. If you find a thumbnail you hadn't intended to include, just click on EDIT and DELETE. Maurice.
