Q Where is it written that the United States should have only two major political parties? A Nowhere. In fact, George Washington and other American leaders at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 were opposed to the idea of political parties of any kind, and no mention of them is made in the Constitution. The genesis of our two-party system occurred when two opposing political factions, in basic disagreement over the nature and function of government and society, emerged during George Washington's administration. One faction, led by Thomas Jefferson, opposed the idea of a strong central government, distrusted urban commercial interests and advocated a society based on the values of the small farmer. The other faction, the Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton, favored a strong centralized government.
