Larry (R2) Subject: HP black refill hole>Sandi 11/1/98 9:42:22 AM PST Morning Sandi and what I do to fill the hole on the 800-1000 series HPs is to use an allen set screw. It self-threads into the nylon which held the factory ball and you can remove and install it as many times as you refill. Have never had a leak problem with that method. I too would be a little hesitant to use tape only as Glenn said. Can't tell you exactly why they chose the bottom on this particular cartridge but I have never had one leak. For those who are copying their CDs to their HDs, an additional instruction for PM7 which I don't remember having to do for PM4: In C:Program Files\Mindscape\Printmaster\Content\P7art change the CD path for EACH CD that you copy to your HD. e.g. [p7cd1art Paths] .CDT=[[C:PMA7025A]]\CONTENT Change to: [p7cd1art Paths] rem .CDT=[[C:PMA7025A]]\CONTENT .cdt=c:\pm7image\content Replace pm7image with whatever you named YOUR PM7 program directory. After copying all my CDs to my HD, PM was still asking for them - it took a while to find where to make the path changes. (invisible) Maurice. Larry (R2) Subject: Copy entire Program CD to Hard drive instuctions>REVISED! 11/8/98 11:04:32 AM PST To copy the entire PrintMaster 7.0 "Program CD" to your hard disk. Got about 640mb of free hard drive space? OK, then the Windows 95/98 version is as follows. 1. Open Windows Explorer (Not Internet Explorer).{vbg} We are going to make a Folder to install the program files into the C drive. Left click on the C: hard drive icon. Now at the top left of your Explorer screen you will see the name "File," click here and you'll get a drop down menu with the first option "New" with an option to the right called "Folder," left click here. This gives you a highlighted "New Folder" option waiting for you to rename it. Let's name it PM by typing over the words "New Folder." 2. Now with the PrintMaster Program CD in the CD-Rom drive (whatever "letter" yours happens to be, generally D: if you only have one hard drive or if not, the drive with the cute little CD-Rom icon). Double left click on this CD-Rom drive icon and on the large window on the right side you will see 7 yellow file folders consisting of Audio, Content, Msreg, Nfsmodel, Runtime, Tutorial, Winhelp, and the single file pmpl70.id (for those with PM Platinum or "similar" with the other versions of PM) These are all the files on the PM Program CD. 3. At top left of your Explorer screen you will see the name "Edit," click here, and in the drop down menu, click the option "Select All." All the above PM folders & files will be "selected" (highlighted). Go back to "Edit," and this time in the drop down menu, choose "Copy." Now go back and left click on the PM folder(the folder we created), to highlight it. One last time go back to "Edit" and click on "Paste." All the files will now be copied from the PM Program CD to your new PM folder. (Depending on your PC, allow up to 30 minutes, it took Mary's PII 300mhz about 10 minutes.) 4. Now we must "inform" the program that the Program folders and files are residing on the hard drive and not to look on the CD-ROM. To do this we must "redirect" it by editing the .ini files located in the User001 folder. (.INI files are plain-text files that contain configuration information. These files are used by Windows and applications like PM to save information about your preferences and operating environment. "INI" stands for initialization). To do this we will go where PrintMaster originally installed the program in the Mindscape folder. Go through the following folders on the C: drive in this order: Program Files; Mindscape; PrintMaster; User001 folder. (C:\Program Files\Mindscape\PrintMaster\User001) Inside the User001 folder we see the file named "User" (a 2k-configuration file). Double left click on this file, which will bring up the Notepad program and the ability to edit the configuration file. Under the [Configuration] heading we will now create a new line by placing the cursor directly behind the closing bracket of [Configuration] by hitting the Enter key (this gives us an open line) and typing CDPath=C:PM Now click FILE at the top left of the window and choose SAVE. Now close (exit) that window and close Explorer. (This redirects the program to look here rather than the CD-Rom drive) We are done.. Even if it will scroll off sooner here, I will try my luck. Dear Customer, Thank you for your inquiry. Due to an unusually high volume of inquiries to PrintMaster technical support, we are offering a few suggestions in attempt to correct any issues you may be experiencing. If the following procedures do not apply to your request, please e-mail us back. We apologize for the untimely response. #1 - Project/Art Errors If you are unable to initialize your own projects, get an illegal operation when attempting to open a projects, receive an illegal operation error message when selecting art from the art gallery, or a PMW stack fault error, use the following steps to correct the issue. Your project index has become corrupted. Use the following steps to correct this. 1) Exit PrintMaster 2) Click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer. 3) Double click the PrintMaster folder (default is PMW). 4) Double click the following folders: USER00?, Projects. 5) Click Tools in the menu bar and select Find, File or Folders. 6) Type the following: USERPROJ.* and click "Find Now" or press [ENTER]. 7) Ten Files should appear. Delete all 10 files (*note you may have more than 10 files), exit the Windows Explorer, and launch PrintMaster. You will be prompted to import saved projects. Follow screen prompts and everything should be fine once back in PrintMaster. 8) If this fails to resolve the issue, repeat this procedure using USERART rather than USERPROJ as the "Your own" collection of imported and acquired images may be corrupted as well. OR It is advisable to update the video driver to prevent a reoccurrence of this issue. To find the type of video driver go to My Computer on your desktop, do a right click with your mouse, select properties, click on the Device Manager tab, click on the Display Adapters, under Display Adapters write down the name of the driver and contact the manufacturer. #2 - Printing Resolutions If you receive stray boxes, shadows around text, lines around characters when printing, or you are unable to print graphics, please visit your printer's web site and download the latest non postscript printer driver. If you have questions concerning the emulation of the printer driver, please contact the printer manufacturer for assistance. #3 - I CAN'T SEE THE PICTURES!! If printmaster graphics/images do not appear on your screen, 1) Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel. 2) Double-click on the system icon and check to make sure the performance tab is selected. 3) Click on the graphics button at the bottom. 4) Decrease the graphics acceleration to none. 5) Say OK. If this does not correct the issue, determine the type of video driver you have and visit their web site to update your video driver. To determine the type of video driver, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, double click on the systems icon, Click on the device manager tab, locate the display adapter, double click and underneath will indicate what type of video adapter you have. #4 - Unable to read CDs Version Platinum 7. ------------------ If you are having trouble reading a disk from the 7.0 Platinum package, please check the Install and Program CD to make sure they both say Platinum 7.0 underneath the Printmaster title. If one of the CD's indicates that it is Deluxe 7.0, please return the deluxe CD to the address below. Also, include a note, or this email, telling us the problem and we will replace it with the correct CD. OR If you have any version of 7.0 and cannot read the disk, please lower the speed of the CD Rom. To complete this procedure you will need to right click on my computer, and select properties. In the system properties window click on the performance tab. Under advanced settings, click on File System. In the File System properties window, click the CD-ROM tab. Under Optimize access pattern for:, change the default to double speed drives and click on apply. OR If you still cannot read the 7.0 disk, you will need to check what type of CD Rom drive you have. If you have Gold Star,Mitsumi, Matshita, or NEC, you will need to change the default setting to No Read ahead. In the system properties window click on the performance tab. Under advanced settings, click on File System. In the File System properties window, click the CD-ROM tab. Under Optimize access pattern for:, change the default to no read ahead and click on apply. If these steps do not correct the issue, please contact 617-761-3000 for a refund or return to the store of purchase. Version Deluxe/Platinum 4.0 --------------------------- If PrintMaster Platinum or Deluxe seems to be unable to read certain CD's, they may have been mislabeled. The following instructions will help you correct this so that you can use all of your CD's properly. 1) Find the letter of your CD-ROM drive. This can be found by opening File Manager or Windows Explorer, or by double-clicking on the My Computer icon. Common letters are D, E, M, and Q. It will never be C. 2) Put the CD with which you are having trouble in the CD-ROM drive. 3) Open a DOS window, by clicking the MS-DOS Prompt icon. This will be in the Main group in Windows 3.1, or in your Start menu in Windows 95. In Windows 95, you can also click Start, Run, and then type COMMAND 4) Type the letter of your CD-ROM drive, followed by a colon. For example, M: 5) Type DIR and press Enter. 6) The first line of the result should be similar to "Volume in Drive Q is ..." and then a series of numbers and letters, such as PL3040A. This number-letter combination is the information you need to note. 7) Type EXIT and press Enter to return to Windows. If you are not having trouble with the first CD in the Platinum edition or with the Deluxe edition, skip to step 10. 8) Search for the file Pm4x.ini. In Windows 3.1, you will do this in the File Manager by clicking File, Search. Windows 95, you can click Start, Find -> Files or Folders. Make sure that you search the C: drive, or the hard drive on which you installed PrintMaster. You should locate the file in the C:\PMW\CONTENT folder, assuming that this is where you installed PrintMaster. 9) When you find this file, double-click it to open it. Change the label number in this list to the label number you found while in the DOS window. It may be listed more than once - change all references to it. By looking under the section [Friendly Names], you can see which numbers are attached to which CD. Afterwards, click File, Save, then File, Exit. 10) If you are having trouble with PrintMaster Platinum, search for the file Pmpl.ini, using the same techniques as in step 8. In this file, change all references to the number you found while in the DOS window. The section [Friendly Names] will indicate which numbers go with which CD. After changing the references, click File, Save, then File, Exit. You should now be able to use the CD's normally. #5 CHOPPY SOUND WHEN LAUNCHING PRINTMASTER This is a possible sound or display driver conflict. Turning off the "movie" allows you to go directly into PrintMaster Platinum. Response: Reloading the sound and/or video drivers may resolve this issue. If this does not resolve the issue turning off the introductory "movie" will relieve the symptoms. To turn off the movie follow the procedures below: Windows 95: Click Start, Select Programs, and choose the Windows Explorer. Windows 3.xx: Double-click on the Main Icon group and double click on the File Manager. 1) Locate the PMW (PrintMaster) folder and double-click on it to open it. 2) Locate the USER00* folder and double-click on it. 3) This folder contains the USER.INI file. Double-click the file to view its content. Here is what you will see: [Configuration] LastRunLevel=4 ShowMovie=1 AddressBookV3=[[A]] \ADDRESS.ABK SenderBook=[[A]]\SENDER\SENDER.ABK EventReminderUsedDefault=True 4) Change the 1 in ShowMovie=1 to a 0 (zero). 5) Close the File and answer "Yes" when prompted to save changes. When you launch PrintMaster Platinum the introductory movie will not appear. #6 Operating Systems 95 or 98?? Printmaster 4.0 or earlier -------------------------- Version 4.0 or earlier were not designed for or supported on Windows 98. We can not offer any suggestions if it is used in this manner. Printmaster 7.0 --------------- All versions of 7.0 will operate on Windows 95, 98 and NT. #7 CANNOT INSTALL PRINTMASTER A conflict has occurred that is preventing the program from working properly. First, using soap and water wash the CD, then check to see if you have any scratches on it. Insert the dry CD back into the CD Rom drive to see if problem has been resolved. OR To correct this and ensure a trouble-free installation of the software, you will need to remove the program, then reinstall it after following the clean boot instructions below. For PrintMaster, you should delete all of the program files before reinstalling. To do this, open File Manager or Windows Explorer. Find the PMW folder, or the folder in which you installed PrintMaster. Delete all files in this folder, but do not delete the other folders here. The folders will be indicated by their small, yellow, rectangular icons. Clean Boot for Windows 95 The following instructions will guide you through the process of "Clean Booting" Windows 95. Performing a clean boot will allow you to temporarily start Windows while excluding any program or device driver that could potentially cause a conflict with the installation of a program. Follow the steps below to perform the clean boot. NOTE! These instructions conform to standard Windows troubleshooting procedures, and should produce no adverse effects. However, some computers, particularly those produced by Compaq, and some by other manufacturers, do not conform to a standard that would allow you to safely perform this procedure. Such computers may not restart properly after a Clean Boot. If you are unsure as to the effect of this procedure, please contact your computer manufacturer before attempting it. 1) Click on the Start button, and then Run. 2) Type WIN.INI and then click OK. The WIN.INI file will appear on your screen. 3) Insert a semicolon ( ; ) at the beginning of the "LOAD=" and "RUN=" lines after locating them in the WIN.INI file. To move the icons, single-click and hold the mouse cursor on the file you wish to move. Drag it to the folder of your choice (on the right). Continue to do this until all files are moved. If you are familiar with dragging several files at once, you may use the procedure. Make note of the icons and the temporary folder you place them in on the blank line below so that you can replace them in the Startup folder after the installation of your program. Verify that the Startup folder is now empty. Temporary Folder _____________________________________________________________ 12) Click the X in the upper right corner of this window, and then click the OK button at the bottom of the Taskbar Properties window. 13) You are now ready to restart your PC. Click on the Start button, then Shut Down, and select Restart the Computer. Then click on Yes. Once your system restarts, press the [CTRL][ALT][DEL] keys on the keyboard. This will display a Close Program window. You should have a program listed here called 'Explorer'. You may also have one called 'Systray'. If you have any other items listed in this window, click on them and click the End Task button. Repeat this for each item in the list, until nothing remains but Explorer and Systray. Install your program. After your program is installed, you will need to reverse the above procedure. This will return your system to its original configuration. To reverse the clean boot procedure: 1) Click on the Start button, and then Run. 2) Type WIN.INI and then click OK. The WIN.INI file will appear on your screen. 3) Remove the semicolons that you placed in front of the LOAD= and RUN= lines. 4) Click on File and Save. Click on File and Exit to close the WIN.INI file. 5) Click on the Start button, Programs, and choose MS-DOS Prompt. 6) Type CD\ and press Enter on your keyboard. 7) At the new prompt, Type REN AUTOEXEC.TLC AUTOEXEC.BAT and press ENTER, and then type REN CONFIG.TLC CONFIG.SYS and press enter. 8) If you did not have anything in the Startup folder to begin with, skip to step 13. If you had icons in the Startup folder, follow these final steps: 9) Click on the Start button, Settings, and Taskbar. 10) Click the tab labeled Start Menu Programs, then click the Advanced button. 11) On the left side of this new window, click the "+" symbol to the left of the Program folder. You should now find a Startup folder in the list that appeared below the program folder. Click the startup folder once to highlight it. 12) Consult your notes from step 11 above, and move your icons from the temporary folder back into the Startup folder. 13) Restart your computer, and your computer will be returned to its original configuration. #8 - REBATE For information on rebates, you can contact our Customer Service department. Subject: Copy PM Program CD to HD (Larry's Windows 98 version) 11/7/98 7:29:53 PM PST So you wish to copy entire Program CD to the hard disk? Got about 640mb of free hard drive space? OK, then the Windows 98 version is as follows. 1. Open Windows Explorer (Not Internet Explorer). {vbg} Now we must make sure we "see" all the files in order to copy them to the hard drive. To do this go to View, this will open a drop down menu and the bottom option is called Folder Options. Left click here and you'll be presented with yet another smaller window with a "View Tab," click here. You will see in the white window portion of this window an option of "Hidden Files" you will click on the "button" named "Show All Files." What this did was to allow us to actually see ALL the files necessary to copy over to the hard drive. Left mouse click the OK button, which will close that window and put us back to Windows Explorer. 2. We are now going to make a Folder to install the files into the C drive. Left click on the C: hard drive icon. Now at the top left of your Explorer screen you will see the name "File," click here and you'll get a drop down menu with the first option "New" with an option to the right called "Folder," click here. This gives you a highlighted "New Folder" option waiting for you to rename it. Let's name it PMW by typing over the words "New Folder." 3. Now with the PrintMaster Program CD in the CD-Rom drive (whatever "letter" yours happens to be, generally D: if you only have one hard drive or if not, the drive with the cute little CD-Rom icon). Double click (left mouse button) on the CD-Rom drive and on the large window on the right side you will see 7 yellow file folders consisting of Audio, Content, Msreg, Nfsmodel, Runtime, Tutorial, Winhelp, and the single file pmpl70.id (for those with PM Platinum or "similar" with the other flavors of PM) These are all the files on the PM Program CD. 4. Next you want to left click on the first folder "Audio" and while holding down the "Shift Key" left click on the bottom file "pmpl70.id." All folders and files should now be "selected" and with the RIGHT button HOLD and drag all the files over to the PMW (the folder we just made) and release the button. You will now have the option to Copy Here and left click that option. All your files will be copied from the PM Program CD to your file folder PMW. (Depending on your PC allow up to 30 minutes, it took Mary's PII 300mhz about 10 minutes.) 5. Now we must "inform" the program that the Program is residing on the hard drive and not to bother looking on the CD-ROM for it. To do this we must "redirect" it by editing the .ini files located in the PMW directory. (.INI files are plain-text files that contain configuration information. These files are used by Windows and Windows-based applications like PM to save information about your preferences and operating environment. "INI" stands for initialization). To do this we will go where PrintMaster originally installed the program in the Mindscape folder. To do this go to the following folders on the C: drive in this order: Program Files; Mindscape; PrintMaster; User001 folder. Inside the User001 folder we see the file named "User" (a 2k-configuration file). Double left click on this file which will bring up the Notepad program and the ability to edit the configuration file. Under the [Configuration] heading we will now create a new line by placing the cursor directly behind the closing bracket of [Configuration] by hitting the Enter key (this gives us an open line) and typing CDPath=C:PMW Now click FILE at the top left of the window and choose SAVE. Now close (exit) that window and close Explorer. (This redirects the program to look here rather than the CD-Rom drive) We are done.. Have fun!¼Larry and lovely "beta tester/editor" Mary in sunny CA Larry (R2) Subject: Convert MS Works to PM>Chuck 12/5/98 10:43:46 AM PST Chuck, our very own guru Sharon from Ohio posted this very informative way to import addresses into PM from MS Works. My printing was again more of the pastel colors. I fooled around checking a couple of things, tried printing our a couple of other graphics, and still the reduced coloring. Finally remembered I did a few photos the other day for my youngest daughter, and changed 'fast bit map printing' to 'smoothing', and guess what? Back to the brilliant color. Learning something new everyday! Glad I didn't call Think-ink and make an a__ of myself! I actually never knew smoothing had anything to do with color...assume it had something to do with smoothing edges. If anyone has any more comments, I'd appreciate the information. I was sweating that one out...thought it had something to do with re-inking. Be back later tonight. It's almost supper time here..hubby due home from work soon and I don't have anything ready. Maybe if I'm real nice, he'll take me out for supper. I've been in the kitchen all week baking cookies, and only have my kipfels to make tomorrow. I think I deserve a break today! Spamless (spamless@nil.nil) Subject: Saving Preferences between sessions 1/10/99 6:11:01 AM PST To Ute: Hi John, that's what I've done. Read-only it works fine and I haven't got any error message yet. ----- That's great! As long as it causes no problems ... and in fact, I am soon going to make my USER.INI file read only too! (after either putting my five favourite fonts in the Most Recently Used Fonts section or deleting it entirely)! ----- For those who don't know what we are talking about, some settings for PM are saved (between sessions) in the file USER.INI in the USERxxx (xxx probably being 000 or 001) in your PrintMaster Installation directory. Among those are the five most recently used fonts (buggy in PM7.01), whether or not the Help window is open, the location of the help window, the category that opens when you open the Ready_Made and Art_Gallery sections, the five most recent projects you worked on, etc. I worried that when PM was done with a session and you closed it and it tries to write the current settings to USER.INI it would complain/crash if that were read_only. Apparently (at least for the German version) it does not. If you set the USER.INI file the way you want (project category with which you start, either remove the most recently used fonts section entirely or put your five favourite fonts there, etc.) and make it READ_ONLY (and this does NOT cause problems) it will lock in your settings. No longer will you have to be sure to reset the project category when you exit PM (so that the next time it opens to the category you like -- I have it set to Your_Own for speed, so too for the Art_Gallery). Information will change WITHIN a session (while working on projects, the five most recently used fonts will appear at the top of the font list) BUT your defaults/preferences will be reset when you restart PM (when you exit PM, it will not be able to reset the USER.INI file (if it is read_only) and your favourite settings will show up each time you start PM). Check the USER.INI file and see if you would like to LOCK in the settings that it holds. If so, configure PM the way you want. Then make the USER.INI file read_only (you may want to, after making a backup, even try editing it with a text editor -- important if you have version 7.01 and want the five most recently used fonts to be what you just set -- your five favourites ... you will have to remove the default_directory info that mistakenly gets prepended to the font names). Remember that you did it! So if you do want to make changes to the settings later, you remember to remove the read_only status so they will "take". Spamless (spamless@nil.nil) Subject: Fixed Preferences 1/10/99 10:43:32 AM PST Oh, pfui. Locked (READ_ONLY) my USER.INI file. Works. But, if I go to ready mades, and select a category --- work for awhile and go back to load a similar project, up pops my default/initial category (NOT the one I had just been browsing -- it appears that leaving the Project Gallery and restarting it, during the same PM session reloads the settings from USER.INI) (and PM cannot now update that in the USER.INI file) -- I may go for overwriting the USER.INI file with a default set before starting PM rather than locking it. (hmmm... will one be able to choose a different address book with the USER.INI file locked? I wish I could lock just SOME of the entries) #4 - Unable to read CDs Version Platinum 7. ------------------ If you are having trouble reading a disk from the 7.0 Platinum package, please check the Install and Program CD to make sure they both say Platinum 7.0 underneath the Printmaster title.
