Perhaps someone can help me with these vexing problems: How do I change the space between lines of text and title (it's too airy)? How do I put a line (edge border) around photos as I put them into the newsletter? Is there an easier way to have PM make three evenly spaced and sized legs of text than to type in the dimensions for each one? (Also, why do my dimensions always revert back to original ones when I click on OK after resetting the dimensions?). I've been tempted to get some other software (PM was a gift; I've been told MS Publisher is good) but I suspect it's a user problem, not PM.... Thanks, much, for any help. Kristen. Donna (damcrow@tusco.net) Subject: Steph>reinking HP820Cse User's IP Address: 207.206.99.139 May 12, 1998 (12:15 PM PDT) Steph> yes you can reink the HP820. That is the printer I have and have refilled both color and black cartridges with no problems. I was amazed at how easy it is. I am copying and pasting some info here from "our very own reinking guru", Larry. This is from two separate postings. Here is goes: first posting: All of the HP 800 series printers are amongst the easiest cartridges to refill. Only the FIRST refilling on the black 51645A cartridge can be troublesome in that the original OEM ink and the refill are not totally compatible. By that I mean you will sometimes get some “foaming” and hence air bubbles and streaking during printing. Cure #1 is to rinse the cartridge out with water before refilling with non-OEM ink or #2 you print out a heavy black graphic or two to use up the mixed ink. Due to the nature of these cartridges you refill the black from the bottom and the colored from the top. It is best with ALL printers to refill BEFORE the ink runs out or shortly thereafter. The ink acts as coolant and when you get low (out) of coolant, the resistors overheat and breakdown sooner. This is why I recommend “topping off” your cartridges after 250 sheets (half ream) and how some folks get more refillings between replacements than others. Hope this helps and happy refilling (reinking). 2nd posting: . I usually refill around 250 sheets (half a ream) of paper, mainly because our style cartridges have electrical resistors that control the current to each micro-nozzle. These resistors must stay "fixed" in terms of resistance (read: ohms). When they get over heated their resistance changes. After enough "over-heats," the resistance value exceeds the acceptable range and you'll get poor quality output, color distortion, or faint printing. The ink in the cartridge acts as "coolant" (somewhat like the coolant in your radiator), keeping the resistors cool, preventing over heating. Now, when the cartridge starts going empty (streaking) and the printer continues to try to print, over heating occurs. If left TOO long this will "burn out" the cartridge. This is why our cartridges have a limited life in terms of how many times they can be refilled. Each time there is a no/very low ink situation and the resistors overheat the life of the cartridge is diminished. The remedy here of course is a new cartridge. To extend life, refill your cartridge at the first sign of low ink or do the "top off" procedure…Larry. (PS, your black cartridge is refilled from the bottom.)End post. I have downloaded IE4 and use it w/o problem, although I only have an old (i.e. 2 years or so, which is rather old in this field) 486 computer. You were wise not to choose the active desktop, because this has caused a lot of trouble for many users. Before I installed it, I had read a lot of advise on how to do it, because I knew that some/many had crashed their Windows when trying. I found that the two most important advises were to see to it that you have the latest versions of video driver and BIOS version for your computer. The first one is easy, if you know which version that you already havé, then just go to yr graphic card manufacturer´s web site (in my case ASUS)and check if there is a newer version to download. Same thing with the BIOS version (in my case AWARD), but installment of this update is not for everyone and you may choose to have someone install it for you. If you make the wrong things with the BIOS update, you may not be able to start yr computer AT ALL! Anyway, I´m glad that I followed these advises, I can now use IE4 and Netscape 4.05 alongside (I need to test them both for various reasons). Most second time arounds fail. .......I either get banding that will not disappear with tons of cleanings or nothing at all. This is with topping off to make sure that I don't allow the cartridge to go low on ink. I also experience the same thing at about the one quarter full ink mark. It appears that Epson cartridge sponges are being made to repel the ink. Dan and others have mentioned some of the Epson problems. Motto here.......next time around go for the HP logo. Rusty Maurice (m@azstarnet.net) Subject: Scanning > Rusty User's IP Address: 169.197.55.22 May 07, 1998 (1:13 PM PDT) If you scan a full 8.5 by 11 page with photos at 300 DPI, you will end up with an enormous file, several MBs in size. It is better to scan each picture separately and correct and/or modify it, later save each picture under its own name. The resulting files will be smaller and they will easily fit on a floppy, in case you want to save them outside your hard disk. A huge file will not fit on a floppy, in case you scan a full page of pictures. But it is not always necessay to scan a color picture at 300 DPI. It is a waste of file space and the quality does not improve markedly. I have the best results with scanning color pictures at 150 DPI. The file format (extension) will also influence how many will fit on a floppy. The most compressed one are JPG and GIF (I prefer GIF because it does not influence the quality as much as JPG does) The next best one is PCX. File formats in BMP or TIF give good quality, but result in rather large files, as no compression is involved. Maurice. It must be one of the first, because it isn't even on most of the charts any more, but it continues to work beautifully and I re-ink in continually. However, I have been successful only in reinking immediately, not in storing a reinked cartridge. One of the tips I read was to gently raise the needle while slowly injecting, so the ink spreads throughout the sponge. I do occasionally let the cartridge sit for an hour or two if it doesn't begin to flow immediately, but there's usually no delay. If you check you will find out that Art CD 1 & 3 and Photos CD 4 will not load, but Art CD 2 and Photos CD 5 will. I have sent 3 e-mail messages to tech support and called the 800, but have not yet received any response. It has been over a week and I like you am getting very frustrated. I did return the first one I got and the second one did the same thing, I also loaded it on three different computers and got the same result. If I ever get an answer from Mindsacpe I will post it. It would seem it is definitely a technical problem, that they should be able to solve. Frank (out here) Subject: Invites > Ivia User's IP Address: 208.131.249.72 May 15, 1998 (4:05 PM PDT) Hi, Ivia. Welcome to the Wonderful World of PrintMaster (thanx Mr. Disney) and the chat room. You didn't say what size your invitations are, but they will load in your printer just like a standard 8-1/2 X 11 sheet, all the way to the right. You may want to experiment with plain paper the first few times you try to print them, to be sure everything is in the proper place. When it comes time to print, click on "Outside Only" in the window that pops up when you click on print. This will print the front, and your colofon on the back, if you use one. Notice the way the page comes out of the printer, flip it over, print side down, you may have to rotate the page 180 degrees, click print, and in the window that opens again, click "Inside Only". This will print the inside. PMG 4 doesn't have an invitation template, as I'm sure you have already discovered, but you can use the half fold card, or poster template, and adjust everything as needed. If you need any more help, feel free to e-mail me at bakerf@duluth.infi.net. You might also want to check out Michael Goldberg's web page at http://members.xoom.com/mbgoldberg. Click on PrintMaster, there may be a template or instructions there. Sorry for the length of this, and hope it helps. Later, Frank connie (Caylor111@mail.tritium.net) Subject: cardstock-Lori User's IP Address: 205.156.237.61 May 16, 1998 (2:49 PM PDT) Lori, I just bought ivory cardstock at Staples for $4.99 for 125 sheets. That was 67 lb. It's lighter than I usually use but I thought that I would try it. Office Max also has ivory in 110 weight for $8.99 for 250 sheets in their catalog. I haven't checked to see if they had it in the store. I also got ivory invitation envelopes at Staples. They were more expensive than the white at $13.69 a box of 250. I cut the cardstock in half and have an equal number of cards and envelopes. Then I choose half-fold card and design my card. My printer allows me to choose custom size paper so I put in 5.5x8.5 and they turn out great. Just finished making my son's graduation announcements with business cards inside and people could not believe I made them myself. They said I should go in business. If you look on the PrintMaster CD, you will find a directory names pictures. Under this directory you will find lots of sub directories containing pictures. These have several different file formats (.cgm, .bmp, .jpg, etc.) For your website, the .jpg and .gif file formats are probably best, because they are more compressed (i.e. take up less space on the disk and are shorter to download) than other file formats. To convert a .cgm or .bmp file to another file format such as .jpg, you need another program. I use Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasco.com), and others on this board have mentioned something called HiJak. Then you can use those pictures from PrintMaster on your web site. If you want to use one of your projects as a picture, either print it out and scan it in as a picture, or copy and paste your project into one of those graphics programs mentioned above and save it in the correct file format. Other tips, check out my website above in the PrintMaster tips section. Click on ADD and click on FIELD Click on Receivers address then click on PRINT When the print dialog box comes up click on FILL IN FIELDS then click on receivers at the bottom of the box. Next box click on ALL then ok and ok in the next box. Then hold the left mouse button and move to picture to wherever you want. If you do a test printing you will find out how far outside the border lines you can move it. -- If it is a text box, click on the border line outside the text box. Again the cursor will change into a four-way arrow. Hold down the left hand mouse button and move. --- Conversely, you can click on one of the handles of either the picture or the text box and drag the handle (black dots around it) to enlarge it. If you click on a corner handle and hold down the CNTRL key simultaneously, you will be able to enlarge without distortion. Maurice. Maurice (m@azstarnet) Subject: Corkboard > Joy User's IP Address: 169.197.55.22 May 20, 1998 (10:37 AM PDT) Hi Joy, yes, I have seen a lot of problems with screensavers, such as Corkboard. The fact that they are free should tell you something: no guarantee. They might work well on the author's computer, but they have not been tested on many other systems, as is done by serious developers. PM seems to be ultra-sensitive to any TSR (memory resident) programs, such as screensavers. In one case, when the registry was corrupted by it, I found the only remedy was to uninstall Windows entirely and start all over, minus the screen saver, of course. We used the screensaver CD as a frisbee afterwards. The dog destroyed it at his first retrieval attempt. (ha!) Maurice. What we have is an outer case consisting of two piece steel outer shell with a plastic center divider to hold the print-head and resistor circuitry. Inside we have a foil covered plastic bladder and inside of the bladder is a stainless steel spring assembly (this replaced the plastic bladders (lungs) that exist in the other black HP cartridges. The squeezing action before final sealing after refilling is to compress slightly this internal spring for retention of the ink in the bladder. NOT a sponge to be found….heh, heh……Larry Daisy (*) Subject: All - Bookmarks & Favorites User's IP Address: 153.36.8.133 May 20, 1998 (7:30 PM PDT) For anyone who has switched browsers there is a freeware utility at PC World called NavEx that will convert your Bookmarks to Favorites and/or Favorites to Bookmarks. http://www.pcworld.com/software_lib/data/articles/internet/4008.html Stuart Elflett (stuart_elflett@partsovernight.com.au) Subject: RE:> Cakelady -> Labels... User's IP Address: 203.10.89.9 May 20, 1998 (8:09 PM PDT) Hello Cakelady... Do we get a cake for the right answer?? :-) I have two solutions... one is a handy label sheet from Avery, which is just one big label... but if you really want to do it on your existing label sheets, I'd recommend making a quick template by measuring the spacing of the labels (and the gutters, etc), checking it on plain paper (hold up to the light, behind your labels, and you can see how well it's working...) Once it's spaced right, select all and group it for ease of removal - Leave a nice easy 'handle' to grab your template with... Create your labels just as a text box - the template will help you make sure they'll all line up... then, once it's finished, select your template and delete it, leaving your neatly spaced text behind... After you open it, click on EDIT and PASTE. The project appears on the screen. Click on FILE and SAVE AS. Give it a directory to save it in, a file name and an extension, e.g. C:\TEMP\PHOTO1.JPG. If you have Netscape navigator, for example, you can go up to the file menu and select Save As.. and it will save the HTML page that is the chat board at that moment. Save it as chat0521.html or something like that, then later you can double click on the file from your explorer and it will bring up the browser automatically to view it - you don't have to connected to the internet at that point in order to view the saved file. It says on the box and inside that the version is 4.0, but the upgrade messes it up very badly and I was told that it is not for Platinum, even though no one says that. It took me a half hour on the phone to California and 3 calls to the 800 number of the company to get my program straightened out because when you uninstall and reinstall the upgrade stays in another directory and reinstalls ITSELF. So you have to call the company to get rid of it.. I love my program. I purchased the CD Library and am happy with it but would like to know how to install it to the hard drive since no one seems to know how, but it says on the paper that comes when you purchase it that you can do it. Also when printing envelopes for 1/2 fold cards there is no envelope template exactly the right size.
