At Michael's website, there is a link to PKZip under "PrintMaster Projects to Download"...thank's Michael for an excellent website...or you can go directly to www.pkware.com. In fact, in the latest review on Zip-utilities in PC Magazine March 24, 1998, PKZip 2.60 won clearly over WinZip 6.3, first since Winzip's long leadership. Apparently, PKZip now has better interface, can handle more file types than WinZip and do both unzipping and zipping (WinZip only takes care of unzipping) and handles virus checking in a better way. Peter :>) Lynn Campbell Behnke (Alambil@aol.com) Subject: Make a May basket User's IP Address: 152.163.204.136 May 01, 1998 (7:33 AM PDT) Happy May Day, We have a May basket tradition here in which small paper cones are filled with spring flowers and/or small gifts and placed on someone's front door knob. We ring the bell then hide and giggle until the recipient invites us in. You can pass on this fun tradition by making a pretty and simple May basket with PM. Use a horizontal poster. Start with a very large circle--so large almost 3/4 of it is off the page. Fill it with a pretty pastel color and mask off all but a quarter of the circle with some white non-outlined shapes. Raise this quarter circle high enough on the page that you can just squeeze a rectangle the length of the paper beneath it and fill this rectangle with color to match. Select a pretty spring graphic and center it on the quarter circle. Print on card stock. Cut out the two pieces. If you cut the round edge of the quarter circle with fancy scissors, so much the better. Roll the quarter circle into a cone and use a glue stick to join the edges. Staple on the other piece for a handle to slip over a door knob. (You can wait to staple it after slipping it through a door handle on site if necessary.) Fill it with tiny branches of spiraea or forsythia, or use lily of the valley or grape hyacinth or whatever is in your yard for a lovely, inexpensive gesture of love or friendship. Marty (marty@csj.net) Subject: mime files User's IP Address: 208.138.185.209 May 05, 1998 (8:46 PM PDT) I don't know anything about MIM files, but here is something I had saved from another group. ******* MIM files in AOL: here is some information off the AOL Help Screen ******* ***** The Internet's e-mail system handles basic text files nicely, but doesn't reliably handle binary files -- files like pictures or word processing documents. So, when you send an e-mail message with a file attachment to someone on the Internet, the AOL software automatically encodes or translates the attachment using a system called MIME. (MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.) MIME converts the binary attachment to a text format that can be handled by Internet e-mail. The message's recipient needs a program that can decode the MIME e-mail and turn it back into a binary file that the computer can work with. When you receive MIME files... When someone sends you a MIME-encoded file in e-mail, it needs to be translated back into a format that your computer can understand. Depending on the mail system that the sender used, the AOL software may or may not be able to automatically decode the MIME file. If it was able to decode the file, the e-mail's file attachment will be in its original, binary format: such as .GIF, or .ZIP. If AOL was unable to decode the MIME file, the attachment will be in MIME format, with an filename extension of .MME. Download this file--it is simple to use a utility to convert the .MME file back to a binary file. Windows users can use the freeware application WinCode to easily decode MIME files. You can download WinCode from this Web site: http://www.members.global2000.net/snappy/software.html. After you've downloaded and installed WinCode. run the program and choose "Decode" from the FILE menu. Choose the .MME file that you downloaded and the file will be decoded. Macintosh users can use the shareware application "Decoder" to easily decode MIME files. You can download Decoder from this Web site: http://www.concentric.net/~Colu mbin/. After you've downloaded and uncompressed Decoder, drag-and-drop the .MME file that you downloaded onto Decoder. A decoded, binary version of the file will be created on your hard disk. When you send an attachment to an Internet user... When you attach a file to an e-mail message that you send to an Internet user, it will automatically be MIME-encoded. In order to use the attachment, your message's recipient must have a MIME- complaint e-mail program or use software that can decode MIME files--to translate it back into a format that his or her computer can understand. If the recipient has a MIME-complaint e-mail program, the MIME attachment will probably be automatically decoded for him. If not, the recipient can easily translate the file using a utility program. Windows users can use the freeware application WinCode, available from http://www.me mbers.global2000.net/snappy/software.html. Macintosh users can use the shareware application "Decoder," available from http://www.concentric.net/~Colu mbin/. Lynn Campbell Behnke (Alambil@aol.com) Subject: scrambled text User's IP Address: 152.163.205.87 May 06, 1998 (8:36 PM PDT) The scrambled text phenomenon is a function of low resources. It is especially bad for me in long documents, but can happen even in one pagers if I have a bunch of other stuff open or it's been a while since I rebooted. The easiest (but not permanent) way to fix it is just to grab the text box and move it over a bit. You can then click on Undo so it goes right back. Lynn (That was the tech's suggestion.) Lynn Campbell Behnke (Alambil@aol.com) Subject: fading backgrounds User's IP Address: 152.163.205.87 May 06, 1998 (8:46 PM PDT) Teresa, Click on add a graphic and then do a find on "Gradient Blend." If the one you like fades to the top and you want it opposite, just use the flip button after it's in your project. Same for left to right. Black and white graphics are fine for this because after you have put this graphic in your project, you can hightlight it, click on Format and Color or Attributes and get shades of the color of your choice. Expand it to the full background size with Arrange, Position, and Full Page, bleed it off the page, use it anywhere you want. One nice blend which doesn't come under under the Gradient Blend search is called Center Out. It's round and the color is most intense in the center, fading to the outside. Lynn P.S. If you see a graphic you like in a ready made project, open the project, highlight the graphic and then hit delete. It will ask, "Do you really want to delete "rose vine?" or whatever, usually thereby giving you the name of the graphic for which you may then search. Or, the techs say, simply highlight the desired graphic, click on Copy, open your project and click on Paste. Stuart Elflett (stuart_elflett@partsovernight.com.au) Subject: RE: Gradients and stuff!! If you want to make a web page and need a comfortable program w/o need for HTML coding and with "everything" included, I suggest that you look for either Microsoft FrontPage 98 (at www.microsoft.com) or Internet Creator 4.02 (at www.formaninteractive.com). Of course, it depends what you want to do with it. I believe that both of the above are good enough and have a lot of capabilities for setting up a commercial company site. The latter program even has a shopping cart module. For some strange reason, bothe of them cost 149$. I think also that both of them can be downloaded and being able to try out for 30 days. But if you want to set up a private site, you might be satisfied with simpler programs w/o all the bells and whistles. There are many other lower cost or even freeware programs for this purpose. I'm sure of that other people in this chat room have suggestions for such. And there are tons of web site related info to get on the web itself, of course, like HTML courses, acessories like graphics, marketing of yr web-site, making of mailing-lists etc. etc. A few of the knowledge bases that I use are www.wilsonweb.com and www.builder.com. Some people (including Eleanor) had trouble installing it. The installation is a bit confusing, I must admit. The simple ZIPped download version does not contain DLL nor OLE files, necessary for it to run. It relies on your system already having those files installed when you installed Visual Basic. That is why it will complain at installation that certain DLL files are missing, if you don't have Visual Basic installed on your system. For those who are experiencing that problem, please go the TEK site itself, http://village.infoweb.ne.jp/~tek/index.htm and download the FULL INSTALLATION SUPPORT program. But DO NOT USE THIS VERSION OF YOU HAVE VISUAL BASIC ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM. (It would replace certain system files and your MPEG movies would not play anymore) But the full installation version is easy to install, the usual way through "install/remove programs" in Setup. I have operated under three different versions, and they all do the same thing. My latest version is less than six months old.~~~Marie, could it be that you are clicking OK too soon? If you click OK before the drive stops spining you will get a Can't Read From Drive D, or whichever your CD drive letter is. Roberta (DONDOEBERT@prodigy.net) Subject: Toshiba CD User's IP Address: 209.156.7.18 May 07, 1998 (7:23 AM PDT) I just signed up for Printmaster chat. saw a message from Liddee. I have a Toshiba and had the same problem. You have to wait for the cd to stop spinning before you click the OK button. I watch the lights on the cpu and when the cd light goes out I know its stopped. Hope this helps. All seems to be so WONDERFUL until it prompts for a cd insertion. Then it says...it can not read the drive and insert the cd if available. Ha ha. It is inserted all right! I called for Tech support. They walked me through and said that I had Toshiba cd rom driver and needed a new one. That this is common problem others are having. Why should I get a new cd rom driver when they say this is compatible w/ windows 95? If anyone has a bit of hint or advice.......I would greatly appreciate it. What a beautiful family. I will keep you all in my prayers. At the time I gave birth to my twins, I already had a 14 month old, and a three year old. They all kept me busy. (They still do). It is a blur, but we made it through one day at a time. They are all school age now. Take lots of pictures, they grow up so fast. Thanks again for the wonderful web-site. In the Art Gallery put ALL in each of the windows. Then type the words GRADIENT BLEND in the search window and click on FIND NOW. You will be presented with several gradients. (Additional search words are Center Out, Outside In, and Outside in Rainbow) These are not brought up under gradient blend and will have to be entered in search separately. Center out is most useful. Remember that color is not important. You need to click on the one that has the effect you want to create. Then click on SELECT. The gradient will then appear in your project. Size it to fit the page.(or beyond)............. To change the color click on the paint can. Select a color from the palette. Then click on MORE. You will get a rainbow palette with the color you selected as the starting point. You can move the cross hairs to any color you like. Move the slider on the right side to lighten the color. This is to make it more usable as a background. Experiment to get just the color you want. When satisfied click on OK. The color possibilities are virtually limitless. ....................... Lynn Campbell Behnke (Alambil@aol.com) Subject: concert program User's IP Address: 152.163.195.111 May 09, 1998 (8:35 PM PDT) Dear David, I do concert programs, orders of worship, programs for Scouting ceremonies, etc. as half fold cards. This is a comfortable size to hold and read, gives you plenty of room to add artwork if desired, and you can choose which pages to use, since all four are accessible. One caution: When working with a poster you know that although your graphics or text go all the way to the edge, there will be a margin left on all four sides. However, with a half-fold card there is no indication of the margin which will be left in the center of the inside. (We call this the gutter.) So always move your work slightly to the outside edges and print one out before adjusting all the details exactly. Here are a couple of direct quotes:.... "Re: Epson Stylus Color Black Banding Did you know that you need to switch the printer off after 3 head-cleaning cycles - it is programed to do nothing after 3 - despite sounding like the cycle is working. I had to do about 3 sets of 3 to get mine going (under the directions of the Epson telephone team)."......"One caveat: I've found that Epson's cartridges refill well once or twice, but beyond that it becomes increasingly likely that a refill just plain won't "take." I therefore don't bother even trying past two refills."....Hopefully Larry can shed some light on our problems. Then click on EDIT and COPY. That copies it to the clipboard. Then open a paint program such as Corel, Picture Publisher, and click on EDIT and PASTE. Now click on FILE and SAVE AS. Select a file name and the JPG or GIF extension. Maurice. Lee (leeph@erols.com) Subject: Linda/White Borders User's IP Address: 207.172.207.7 May 10, 1998 (3:52 PM PDT) Hi Linda, I can't answer for changing in Windows, but on my Mac, if you go to "print alignment" you will see two different standards - Tall and Wide. Then where it gives the different measurements, click on each of the edges one at a time and change it to 0.0 then click on OK. You have to do Tall and Wide separately. Changing these to "0" dropped the size of the white borders to approx. 1/16" which is a big change on my printer(Epson 500). If you are running Windows using Maurice's way may be easier, I don't know. Would be worth a try to do both maybe! Good Luck! Maurice (m@azstarnet.net) Subject: E-mailing PM projects > Cassidy User's IP Address: 169.197.55.22 May 10, 1998 (4:36 PM PDT) Hi Cassidy, with your project on the screen, click on EDIT and SELECT ALL. Then on EDIT and COPY. This copies it to the clipboard. Then open a paint program, such as Corel or Picture Publisher, and click on EDIT and PASTE. Now click on FILE and SAVE AS. Give it a file name and either the JPG or GIF extension. Those file formats are compressed and small enough to attach to an e-mail. Your recipients just need a paint program to open it up and print it. --- Another method is to print the finished project and scan it. The resulting file, if it is not already a JPG or GIF file, can be converted similar to the above, by importing it into a paint program. Maurice. Dan (foxbox@whyweb.com) Subject: Refilling Epson Inkjet Cartridges User's IP Address: 38.28.48.211 May 10, 1998 (8:55 PM PDT) Dear Helga, I have been refilling my Cannon injet BJC-620 inkjet printer for about a year now and have just recently convinced the folks at work that it would be a good idea to start refilling the Epson printer in the office. I've got some insights you might find helpful. . . first, you will never get as much ink back into your Epson cartridge as when it came from the factory. There will be "air" gaps in the foam which make the printer get a "vapor lock" kinda like a fuel injection system on your car. Anyway, here's what you can do to minimize this situation. First, fill the cartridge "very" slowly using a long needle to get the ink as evenly distributed throughour the foam as possible. Next . . .after filling all the colors as full as you can put the cartridge in a plastic ziplockbag with a paper towel on the bottom of the bag under thecartrdge outlet holes. Now take the zip lock bag and "swing" it it a circle and use centrifugal force to move the ink down into the foam compartment. After you spin the cartridge in this manner a few times you will probably be able to inject some more ink into the top of the foam again. After you see the ink is at the top again "suck" a little ink back out of the foam with the needle so you can seal the hole where you injected the ink. I like to use a drop of "hot glue" because it makes an "air tight" seal. Be sure you seal the little factory air intake holes with tape and also the outlet holes if you are not going to reinstall this refilled cartrdge right away. If you are storring this one to use latter be sure to put it into a zip lock or plastic cup so that if it "springs a leak" you won't have ink all over your nice carpet ! When you put the refilled cartrdge back into your printer again run the cleaning cycle about 5 times and then print out a tes tpage to see if all the colors are printing correctly. Keep running the cleaning cycle untill it prints normal. I know this sounds like a lot of trouble, but believe me, it's worth it for the cost of ink cartridge refilles these days. Any more questions . . . just give me an email. Happy printing, Dan
