Hi Mayre...

Try this site for downloading the player you need to hear "Carousel".

Sorry about the Post-It problems. Here in the States there was never an inquiry for any credit card numbers. Maybe give it one more shot?

To Janet:
What I'm about to recommend to you probably won't be of any value in THIS instance (I'll give you one possibility at the end), but here's what *I* do, and I highly recommend it as a practice:
1. There are 4 very important files that I recommend you track/archive:
a. c:\autoexec.bat
b. c:\config.sys
c. c:\windows\win.ini
d. c:\windows\system.ini
(above is where they usually are)
2. Go into DOS (I'm a DOS-oriented programmer/person; use FileManager/Explorer if you're not).
COPY each of those, one at a time, to be *.org
3. This gives you a date-stamped copy of each of those as they are right now.
4. Then (HERE's the IMPORTANT PART), get yourself a logbook or whatever you're comfortable with, and EACH time, BEFORE you install a program, COPY those to an incremented-number file annotating in you log what you are installing.
(e.g. BEFORE you'd install Prof Franklin, you'd COPY each to *.001; then, BEFORE you'd install, say Hijaak, you'd COPY each to *.002, etc.
5. This way, you can always get these very important files BACK to the way they were before you made an install, if you suspect/realize system problems.
(i.d., IF you had done this, you could (I'll give an example for config.sys, which would be the same for each)
a. ren config.sys *.bu
b. copy config.001 *.sys
c. etc.
d. Then reboot, and see what happens.
e. The .bu is a device to hold where you currently are, before you try the swapout, etc.
6. NOW, here's the thing you MAY be able to do, even now:
a. Check each of those four files to see if you have a version dated BEFORE you did the Prof F install (many install programs will automatically make a backup of the file before the install (e.g., Prof F MAY have made a copy of win.ini called, for example win.pf ((or whatever)).
Good Luck.

Hi - I got through the Post It site, filled in everything, and all looked well. They do indeed ship to Canada, but won't in my case because I didn't give them my VISA number. And the grey notes with teal ink would have been very nice. Oh, well.

Remember those enticing little AOL disks that came through the mail. Guess which gullible person used one? And guess what it cost her? Enough to feed a family of four for a week or so. And I was lucky. No wonder AOL couldn't wait to stop the company that was distributing these disks. They, by the way, got my VISA number. My friend, who used Master Card, had her charges removed. Oh, we do live and learn . . . sometimes. ~;-} `Mayre

Stanee Rae - thank you for the info. I thought there was something in the PM 7 to do animation, etc. I am beginning to think I need a week's vacation - then I could sit and work on my family page. I hope to get the same day off as my husband as he is much more knowledgeable(spelling?) about files, downloading, etc. This was my first day on the Printmaster page. Everyone seems very friendly! Thanks again. Lynn

Subject: Ed/Slow PM7
10/11/98 5:56:16 PM  PST

I have a DVD which has not given me a problem ever and I can't understand why it should be doing this ONLY with the PM7 Program Disk. I may try a friend's machine who has space (I still think this is relative to Prof Franklin that I just installed Friday). I am not the one who had a problem with 'PM7 wanting some internet connection made before it runs', but I do remember someone else having the problem. I don't know about
'multiple speed' with a DVD, but think your description of variable speed simulates my DVD behavior, because I can hear it doing it's thing (kind of a hum or groan) and just always thought that's what it was supposed to do. My physical memory available is 65052 KB and my system resources are 73%. I know it should be about 80%. Earlier today, I tried shutting down all the TSR's and didn't make a difference. Recently I loaded the post-it program and clipmate. I don't know if they are any kind of hogs. Glenn has e-mailed me without any resolutions, just concerns. I have my 7 yr old twin grandsons with me tonight and tomorrow so I cannot be on here too long. I thought I also might uninstall and reinstall tomorrow after I'm sure my user files and address book are saved. If you have any other suggestions or comments, I'd sure appreciate it. I have used PM7 since August without any problems.

BJ - I've had 'If I Loved You' from Carousel going through my head all day. Went to that great website and there it was. But I don't have the player. Can anyone recall where to download it, please? ASAP

I couldn't get the Post-its. Maybe I clicked all the wrong buttons. They likely wouldn't ship to Canada anyway, so not to worry. ~~~~~Thanks~~Mayre

Subject: Janet / PMP7 Disk 1
10/11/98 5:21:31 PM  PST

To Janet:
*I* have a 24X variable speed CD (which I don't particularily like).
SOME of my CDs really seem to give it fits. Of ALL that I have, PMPlat7's
Program Disk is by far the worst...it sounds like it's gonna die any moment each time I start it off...
My previous version of PMPlat ran just fine.
Some computers have a kind of "artificial intelligence", based on the way the bios and various caches work, and it's conceivable that in certain circumstances the system could end up reacting in a manner where it's basically say "I just don't want to run that program any more...it's too much stress...".
If it's primarily PMPlat7 that's doing it to you, I'd recommend you check with a friend and see if you can test run it on their machine, before you clean the CD; if it runs ok on theirs, that might be a clue...
Also, what are you doing about PMPlat7 wanting SOME internet connection made before it runs? Your cache setting in OPTIONS there could be a factor....

To Janet:
That's kind of 'strange' about your access light... (I would have thought it was analog instead of digital... that it's either OFF or ON.... AND, if that's the case, it would take a shift in POWER to change the intensity.)
I presume your CD player is some "multiple speed" (e.g. 12X, 24X, whatever); IF it's not only multiple speed, but also "variable speed" (i.e. it runs at different speeds, depending on how fast the program disk needs it to run), there have been some problems with that technology in the past. (Typical indication of "variable speed" is that you actually HEAR it speed up and slow down as it runs.)
I'd expect a music CD to be constant speed, and a program to possibly be variable speed, as far as it's needs.

To Janet:
Check your "system resources", please.
(i.e. HELP and then ABOUT WINDOWS).
Your "Physical Memory Available to Windows" should closely reflect the RAM you have; if the "System Resources" is much less than 80% or so free, you've got SOMEthing sucking up your resources, which will in turn slow down many things. If either of those are "off", there are several "pc doctor" programs that can help see what's going on. (I use Norton's PC Tools, but there are some shareware ones, too.)

Hi Stanee-Rae...
That offer did seem too good to be true, didn't it? And certainly the site that steered me to the offer deserves a little credit here too. I had just stumbled across a nifty song server site. Having read its plea to help keep it on the 'Net for free, I was clicking on their sponsors banners as they'd asked and up popped the FREE offer.
So folks, if you've taken advantage of the free Post-Its, visit the following site and click a few ad banners as a "thank-you" compensation.

http://www.songhits.com/SongHits.com-nojava/index1-nojava.htm

This is another one of those sites where one can lose an entire afternoon or evening. Lots of music from Top 40 archives back to the 50's, to Big Band, Country, Show Tunes, etc. A little something for everyone.

Hello Kathy! That is one of the most common questions / request on this chat board. The answer is no, because your printer mechanism (I take it that you are using an inkjet printer?) needs some area to feed the paper. But you can minimize it (the area needed differs from one printer to another) by going into the printer setup within PM. Good luck! Peter :-)

In the USER.INI file, change the SHOWMOVIE=1 to read SHOWMOVIE=0 , click FILE and SAVE.

Hi all...
While rambling through my daily browse, searching for, as Chi would say, "Cool Sites" I found one that led to me wanting to share the bounty with you friends on Live Chat!

I found an absolutely FREE (well, answer 2 questions...) offer for custom-designed, by you, Post-It notes. You get 10, 50-note packages for FREE. Even the shipping's included if you act by October 13. You can choose the style, add a graphic (you can upload one of yours if it's b&W), select the color paper, font, etc.

Sure it's a gimmick to get you to try this company out and yes, they'll have your e-mail address but you can choose not to receive any further mailings from them. They do all sorts of custom printing and since they're serving the entire Internet, they do it at a very reasonable price.

Figuring it was too-good-to-be-true (Who doesn't need Post-It notes?) I decided to check it out. It's real and in 7-10 days I'll have my free personalized Post-Its.

The URL for this site and deal is http://www.iprint.com/116.html?ad=burstfreepostityahoo

I just love free stuff that's actually worthwhile and they say that this offer is worth ~$23.

Check it out. BJ

Hi Koye - About our spelling. It can be confusing. We do indeed spell check as cheque. In other words, you must check your cheque book. We chop wood with an axe. And the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced zed. The folks next door are neighbours. I think the latter is the major difference.

When I write for publication I need to know which spelling the magazine uses. Our newspapers use the Canadian Press spellings, which are American. And when I write to England, I have to remember their spelling is different too, as is that in Australia and New Zealand.

Wonder if there's a website that can help you sort out THAT problem. Fun!!! Mayre

Ed, thanks for the advice. I've deleted Professor Franklin, did a scandisk, PM loads ready-mades just a little slow, but trying to call up a graphic is pretty impossible. I've rebooted several times. Tried to pull up all graphics in 'Printmaster', only pulled up 4 'out of 12,527' and same 4 pulled up under 'All' (out of 172,616) but takes awhile. I've tried my Street Atlas CD and it seems to work normally. I've also just put in a music CD and it works perfectly. I notice the access light is much brighter on the music CD than when it's trying to access PM7. Any chance something has happened to my PM7 Program Disk; I've taken it out and cleaned it. When I get off of here, I'm going to do a defrag. I've just done a scandisk and I defrag regularly. I'll check back in the morning to see if you've had any other ideas.

I bought it at a local drugstore. They have them at Staples, K-mart, etc. They're like a very small hand-held computer and cost anywhere from $25...$100. Depends of how fancy you want it. Mine takes a couple of AA batteries and cost $50. Had it for about 8-9 years and really like it.
Please eat some ice cream for me...LOTS..I can't...since I quit smoking. I hate to buy clothes and if I gain weight..I'll have to buy some new.

Claudine, you have a several options for creating borders. The Borders plus program is one of them - you can click on Borders Plus, then, in that program, click on ADD PICTURE, and the program will tile the picture as a border for you. Your next option is to select ADD PICTURE directly from your poster...you'll be able to select BORDERS from the art gallery, and can stretch them appropriately (as well as layer them further back) once you're back in your poster. The other option is to grab the rectangle tool from the left-hand tool bar, draw a rectangle, then add NONE color from the color pallette. (At that point, you can also select thickness of the line, etc.)

Hello - We can't get all those nice HP offers here in Canada, not all at once. They are offered individually in magazines at no cost at all.

But here's a bonus we do get on some items. Being a bilingual country, we often get a duplicate disk. Identical in content, mind you, but with a French wrapper around it. I've just formatted a few of them to use for copying files. Like that! Think I'll have some ice cream -- comfort food! ~Mayre

I had purchased PM Premium but have sent it back to The Learning Co. Received an offer from TLC for a credit card. After all the trouble everyone has had, why would I want a credit card from them? I love the Printmaster 7 Platinum. Must admit I just have to have (anyway I thought I did) all of the graphics I had in my Version 4 Platinum. I had promised myself no more new software for a while and then I see all of you talking about how great Prof. Franklin is. I have just got to get busy and learn all of the new stuff I have now. Just wanted to remind all of you that have HP printers of all the neat stuff you can get from them. I ordered 3 different offers from them recently. One entitled, "Make School More Cool" has Avery Kids Printertainment, a program "Student Writing Center" which I think comes from The Learning Co., Corel Printhouse and Adobe Photo Deluxe. All this for just $2.00 S&H along with a UPC code. Although, I have 2 HP printers, we have several HP fax machines at work and am able to get UPC codes just about any time I wish. Those of you with Canon printers, I think these programs should work for you as well. Well, I must go...my children are coming over tomorrow to cheer on our favorite team...Kansas City Chiefs...have a good weekend everyone!(P.S. laudine I am not sure what you are trying to do. If you start say a poster project click on border maker and click inside the page of your poster then the border maker comes up. Under ARRANGE you have the choice of corners etc then select a graphic. When you are done just click on the X and the borders will appear in your poster.(Full size) If you want them smaller you can resize them. They can also be made thinner or wider. But that has to be done before you put it into the project.

I turned off the computer so I could do a clean boot, tried again, and the same thing. When I went into 'My Computer', it took forever to bring up the icons for all my drives. Went back into PM7, deleted my new Poster which I made with 10 photos from Professor Franklin, rebooted & still ended up with the same problem. Tried to access the graphics under all, went to dinner, came back and the hourglass was still on the screen. I am sure there is a connection with Professor Franklin as I just loaded it last night. Can someone out there figure what's going on. I'm using Win98, PM7 and have lots of room on my hard drives. I don't know where to go from here, but something is clogging up my computer!

I hear you on the long days, weeks & years. However, my husband and I don't have any children yet. We have been trying to adopt for more than three years, and I've kinda lost faith in it ever happening. But, I do have a partner at the shop, and we split up some of the worse chores like bookwork. She doesn't care for computers, so she does everything that she can manually.

We live in a pretty small town (under 4000) in Nebraska, and we also have a 3500 sq foot gift store (no beannies), but so far it hasn't been too bad. We did agree in the beginning though, if it got to be too much, we would get out. My partner is 50, so she doesn't want to be in forever. However, I just turned 30, so I hope I can keep it up a few more years!

But, I do heed your warning, and will take it under advisement. Thanks for the info.

Angie, I knew about gluing, but we never used it. We learned about it at seminars, etc., but my girls never found it to be too reliable, so yes, we always did them by hand. Homecoming, proms (when they came on Mother's Day weekend),were a nightmare. Yes, I did love it too, and used a computer extensively, but if I had to do it again, I would probably not. I gave my all for 13+ years (10-15 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year). I did not have young children, my 3 were all grown and married and do not understand how people do it with young children. If a husband and wife are in this together, not so bad, but my husband was a sales rep and worked many hours himself. We both retired in December 1998. He shortly took a job as a bank messenger. Doesn't earn lots of money, but he is now getting a paid vacation, paid Blue Cross/Blue Shield (we were paying $675.00 a month) for the first time in 43 years. If you have young children, get out now while you can. Words of wisdom from someone who knows!

As for the cropping, I have several others that can do that. Before I had Irfan, I had a terrible time trying to get Gif's downloaded and playable. I also have ThumbsPlus and that is one I use a lot for viewing all of my graphics at once as well as finding where they are quickly. But ThumbsPlus doesn't do the Gifs from the program, you have to wait until they load from the source. Did download your Vote program, but didn't know it was another Clinton parody or whatever. To Janet:
In Prof Franklin if you start with a rectangular pix of a face, for example, and apply a soft-edge oval around the face, I think you still have a RECTANGULAR image; the area outside the oval only appears to not be there if you place the image on a white background.
(This works fine for iron-ons for white t-shirts, for example.)
I want the area outside the oval to be TRANSPARENT, so you can place the soft edge pix on, for example, a floral background, and it will look like a soft-edged, oval picture on a floral background (i.e. the original regtangle shape will not be a factor any more.
The only way I have attempted to do this is to bring the soft-edged pix into Adobe PhotoShop (or any of the other similar products we've discussed here to use to make our own Fun Pix.)
I can end up with an oval, being transparent outside the oval, but there is a white oval outline outside the feathered edge (which really detracts from the desired effect).

ED, my thin black lines are rectangular, and appear to possibly be the actual size of the scanned graphic, before edge effects are applied. Not all 4 of the lines appear, but are usually on 3 sides, sometimes only on 1 1/2 side. I am working in Win98 environment, with very few problems in PM7. It does appear to be a similar problem to yours. To clarify your problem, if you are doing a circular edge, are you saying that there is actually a line around a circle, with a colored background?

I forgot to mention that Photoshop automatically saves GIFs as 72dpi resolution. JPEGs can be any resolution you want, but for screen use anything over 100 will not improve the look. So change the resolution to 100 or less.

As Glenn said, animations are GIFs. For other images, it depends on what type of image it is. Logos and drawings composed of areas of SOLID colors, and b&w line art, are best saved as GIF. Photos or images with lots of gradations or shades of color should be saved as JPEG. In Photoshop, the JPEGs can be saved on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being lowest quality. Some plug-ins, such as WebVise Totality (www.autofx.com) can actually save more compressed than Photoshop's level 1 JPEG. Of course, you can re-size the graphic also (pixel dimensions) so it is not as large. This helps a lot.

Unlike Ed, I do not have any background color (prints transparent except for the black lines). 2.When I paste the photo into PM7, it is upside down, no big deal to rotate. 3. Don't know if this made national news but over here, there's trouble between the Macaw(sp?) Indian tribe wanting to revive their old-age tradition of whale hunting and the save-the-whale people.
Anyway, thanks for the post on Prof Franklin. I LOVE it. I haven't gotten as far advanced as you are and don't really know much about transparencies. By that, do you mean that you want another object underneath to come through? Don't understand the thin white line either but then, I've never played around with the Fun Pictures.
I bought my PM Premier 7.0 from Costco for $27.99 (instant Costco rebate) - PM's $20.00 rebate = $7.99 + tax (1,000% in WA) but still a great price.
By project exchange, I meant PM finished projects to send to one another. Tangible stuff I can touch, feel, bond with, drool over, ask questions about, etc. so if someone has already done something we would like to do or didn't know could be done, we don't have to re-invent the wheel. For instance, the fun picture that you mentioned. I've just read about it in the manual but haven't gotten around to playing with it yet.
By the way, thanks Pathalf (say that real fast 20X!) - I'll go check out Frank's site.

ACQUIRE and SELECT SOURCE should then appear under the FILE options on your workspace. Select SELECT SOURCE and your scanner should be listed. Select ACQUIRE from the FILE menu and that should start up your scanner software where you do your thing and when done, TA DA!, the scanned object will be saved on your project.

If you do NOT have TWAIN technology, you simply do what you normally do when scanning. In PM, on the ART GALLERY workspace, select FILE and OPEN FROM DISK, and select the saved scanned file (another TA DA!).

Hope this helps...

Subject: Platinum Clip Art Disks

To Davarge:
I ... just purchased the 4.0 PrintMaster Gold Platinum ... when trying to load clipart from the
disc. Everytime I put the correct disc in and double click OK, nothing happens.
-----
Nothing? Does it not give an error message (put the correct disk in and click_on OK or click_on CANCEL)? How long do you wait after putting in the correct disk before clicking_on OK? Usually, 10-20 seconds (for Win95, say, to recognize that you have switched CD disks and refresh the drive data). If that is not the problem, it may be that the CDs have the wrong volume labels... there is info on URL: http://members.xoom.com/mbgoldberg about that.
(basically, there are data files in the PM directory which list the CDs and the expected volume labels -- with the CD in your CD drive, say drive e:, use the command (from a DOS prompt):
vol e:
to see what the volume label actually is. If it differs from the information in the data file, just change the file!)
[when you put the CD in the drive, PM does a "vol" command to see what CD you put in the drive, and compares the volume label to what it expects and if it differs, thinks it is the wrong disk]
