I have tried as many suggestions as possible to try to get this to work. It either says missing DLL or that the program has committed an illegal function.
---
There is an item for SUPPORT (a tab, up above) for sending questions to PM's official support (rather than to us users!)
---
---
If you have come to this chat room by using a shortcut to it without the frames around it, you may not see the support tab up above ... in that case, go to SUBMIT_A_MESSAGE (that opens in the frames again and you can see the support item at the top) (later you can use the back button if you don't want to submit a message to chat!).

Well, getting a different CD and installing that won't help.
Ah, Windows ... why aren't we all running Linux?
When it says a DLL is missing, did you check to see if the file was there?
If you have Win98 did you use its Windows_Update feature (update the system files)?
There is an item for SUPPORT (a tab, up above) for sending questions to PM's official support (rather than to us users!) ... it is going to take a bit of work to find out what the problem/fix is... hopefully they can work it out...

I suspect that is from installing to run from the hard disk. It expects to find the stuff that is on the program disk on the hard disk. If you don't copy the files from the program disk to the hard disk, it gets confused. Or you can edit the INI files. I haven't done that ... Maurice is probably the expert...

Hi Robin! There is absolutely no need for apologies. It´s just that many of us wants to chit-chat ALSO. I think we can have tech and small talk side by side!
One possible reason to your problem is that you might have forgot to check "save pictures with file" (or something similar) when you are about to save a PM project. It´s easy done and think it has happened to all of us!
If you don´t checkmark, then PM doesn´t save the pics and thus cannot find them when you later open the project (unless you have saved them, well I think that you alternatively have to save them in the same project catalog or the art catalog).

Perhaps one of the reasons this room has become so full of technical stuff as of late is that 9 out of 10 times you cannot access the other forums. At least I cannot. Repeatedly it brings me right back to start, rather than forum choices. So I am here with my tecnical question (sorry):
I have PMP 7.0 on Windows 98. I have also installed it to run from the hard drive, rather than the CD. However, in trying to access ready-made projects, I receive the error message that the file is missing or cannot be accessed and it offers to replace the picture. Are these corrupt only to me and possible for me to correct, or have others had the same trouble in accessing certain projects?
Thank you for any insight!

To Karen:
Will the directions [for wallpaper] you gave work the same for 8.0?
---
Yes ... just use FILE|EXPORT for all items on the panel and change the format to BMP (you should design to fit the screen ... a horizontal poster, say) and set the number of pixels to fit the screen too (Windows PLUS! in win95 claims to use JPEGs for wallpaper too ... it doesn't. What it has is a converter and converts JPEGs to a BMP file named Plus!.BMP so windows can use it).
===
Is sending it to My Documents a good idea, then bring it up in Paint and send to Wallpaper?
---
You can just save it in the \WINDOWS directory (that is where Windows looks for wallpaper originally) or you can create your own wallpaper directory. When you choose wallpaper in windows you can browse to and use files saved anywhere.
===
I am never sure if what I scan into PM is a BMP or not? How does one find out.
---
Look at the filename. In Windows Explorer, you can use VIEW|OPTIONS (it may be a bit different in Win98 ... it may be VIEW|FILE_OPTIONS or something) and choose NOT to hide known extensions. Then you will see the BMP or JPG or TIF or whatever after the filename.
You can use third party products to change to BMP format (such as IrfanView which also lets you resize) or even PAINT (when you use FILE|OPEN you can change the type of file it can import). One note, you may get blank screens for importing JPEGs in PAINT. This is due to some programme (such as Office97) adding a new JPEG filter. There is a new version of PAINT.EXE which can use that filter (and a new version of THEMES.EXE if it happens when using themes in Win95) at the MicroSoft site.

To Hal Bomzer:
All of a sudden I am crashing upon opening the art gallery.
---
Sounds like your userproj* or userart* files are corrupt.
Look in the directory in which you isntalled PrintMaster.
Therein is a USERxxx\ subdirectory (xxx probably being 000 or 001 depending upon how you installed Windows).
Inside that there are two subdirectories, PROJECTS\ and ART\.
Inside the PROJECTS\ subdirectory are ten files, USERPROJ.* (that is, they start with USERPROJ. and have different file extensions).
Delete all ten of them
Inside the ART\ subdirectory you will find ten USERART.* files.
Delete those ten.
So... delete twenty files: ten USERxxx\PROJECTS\USERPROJ.* and ten USERxxx\ART\USERART.* (if the only problem is in opening the art gallery, you *may* be able to get away with just deleting the USERxxx\ART\USERART.* files ... or not).
Restart PM.
It will indicate it found projects/art and ask if you want to add them to "Your_Own". Answer yes, and it will recreate the files.
Caveats:
You will lose keywords you may have added.
You will only see the projects and art that you saved to your_own and saved in the default directories (USERxxx\PROJECTS\ and USERxxx\ART\). For those you saved in other locations, you will have to use FILE|IMPORT from the Art_Gallery and Project_Gallery (READY_MADE) menu bars to add them back to Your_Own lists.
Hint:
When done with a project or art which you have added to Your_Own, do not just delete the file. Go to the project_gallery or art_gallery, and right click on it to delete it and remove from your_own list (or use its menu bar's EDIT command and choose to ARRANGE_YOUR_OWN and remove it there). That will also remove it from the listing.
Hint:
Avoid fancy filenames. I try to keep everything to 8.3 (DOSish) without special characters (including spaces) in the filenames. I know Win95 can handle long file names (though I have seen it get confused somethimes) but am not about to rely on PM's handling of the filenames in the Your_Own lists.

Maurice, Janet and all who miss the chatting we used to do here. Count me as one of those. Although I have learned a lot from this space about computers and PrintMaster -- several versions-- what used to draw me here at least once or twice a day were the friendly exchanges. It had a more family feeling when there was less technical and more personal input.
I do think that John/Spamless is right and that many of those looking for help with their programs aren't aware of the other PM Forums where they may find that their questions have already been asked and answered. Even though I'd known the Help Forums were there, it wasn't until recently that I found how very helpful they are, with pages of great information.
Let's get in touch with some of the regulars whom we no longer see here, and there are too many to list....get them to drop in once a while.
A special "Hello" to all of you who are newbies and maybe not so newbies....
This isn't meant to discourage your questions. Far from it, this is one of the great ways to get to meet you, but do check out the other PrintMaster Forums if you don't find an answer here right away.

9/4/99 3:44:47 PM PST
To Jennifer:
How easy is it to publish a web page using Printmaster 7.0?
----
First, get all the information from your provider on how to publish it, where to publish it, what passwords you need to access it, etc. It depends on them.
Many use FTP ... but the directory to which you publish ... well, it may be that when you access via ftp it automatically goes right to that directory. If not, check with your web host.
IF it uses FTP and if it uses that directory, then you can use the WEB|PUBLISH_TO_WEB_SITE item in PrintMaster. I never have.
The other option is to create an empty directory. In PrintMaster use the WEB|PUBLISH_TO_FOLDER and put the results in that empty directory. The files there on your hard drive (after using WEB|PUBLISH_TO_FOLDER) are the files that make up your web page(s) and all must be put on your web site. You can preview them here; manually adjust the HTML code (to remove the obnoxious "PRINTMASTER_WEBPAGE" title which is the only title PM lets you use); adjust the meta-tags, etc. You can then use whatever tools/methogs your ISP gives you for posting your page instead of the PM publish to site tool.
This second (publish to folder and then move the files to the site) may be necessary if your web host uses a different way to post the files (e.g. Netscape's SITES uses its own web based access to post each page, one at a time, rather than ftp). Usually, I prefer publish to folder and then using other tools to move them to my host (I usually use Netscape's COMPOSER to create my pages and then ftp to post them).

Subject: margins
9/4/99 3:30:58 PM PST
To jan:
Each time I align my printing on printmaster platinum it doesn't work.I can never get the printing to centre on the page.
---
If you can get centering to work on posters and the front of quarter fold cards ... good. If centering is working on posters, it is working. Period.
You won't get centering to work on the front of half fold cards (there is a missing margin at the edge of the front which is at the fold in the page ... either put a non-printing guide line half an inch from that fold edge of the panel and visually center, or use centering, but then group things and move them a quarter inch away from that side ... a quarter inch will move a quarter inch away from the fold and a quarter inch towards the edge of the paper ... centering inside a half fold missing margin). So, too, for the inside of just about all cards.
Do NOT use the printer alignment in order to get centering to work on, say, the front of a half fold card no matter what PrintMaster's support says. It will just screw things up. Look at some of the ready made cards where things had to be manually adjusted to take into account the missing balancing margins.
In short, centering does NOT work on many panels of many projects (put a rectangle on each panel of each project you use ... change the colour to none and put in, say, a two point edge to the rectangle and position it full panel. Then add a text box telling you which panel it is ... say, "FRONT OF HALF FOLD WIDE CARD". Do that for all the panels and print it ... it will show which panels are missing the balancing margins (the ones where this rectangle is not centered). Those are the panels where you need a balancing half inch margin at one of the panel's edges (usually at an edge of a panel which is at a fold in the paper). In PM7 you can put in a non-printing guide line there (half inch from the folded edge) and visually center between it and the other (outer ... at edge of paper) edge or use centering but then GROUP and move everything, en bloc, one quarter inch away from the folded edge.
SOME panels DO take into account the fold and put in a balancing margin (front of quarter fold cards, for example). Some do NOT (front of half fold cards, for example).

Which version? 4? 7? 8?
There is not much to t-shirt transfers. You have to be sure to print your stuff backwards onto a transfer sheet and then iron it on to the t-shirt. You can use any project.
You can use any programme, too, if your printer driver itself has the option to print reversed! Or if the programme has the option to make that setting (as PrintMaster does).
If you have PM7 or 8 or maybe 4, go to BrandNew from the Hub ... there should be a T-shirt project there ... all it is is a poster which automatically changes the printer setting to print reversed (at least that is how it works in PM8 ... the reversed print box is checked ... it may be different for PM7 -- do a print preview and if necessary a test print on plain paper to make sure it is printing reversed)
If you have PM4 (which may not have a t-shirt project), simply create your design on a poster ... use FILE|PRINT. There should be an option there to print-reversed-for-t-shirts (this will automatically be selected if you use a t-shirt project in PM8 ... so the t-shirt project is a very special project which saves you the onerous task of checking this box!).
NOTE that if you then print another project ... when you use FILE|PRINT, make sure that reversed print box is not checked if you are not printing a t-shirt! (it may get "stuck").

I just imported my address book from PM7 to PM8 by doing the following...

Or, as the address books in various (at least since version 4) of printmaster are the same, you can simply copy the ADDRESS.ABK book from the BOOKS subdirectory of the directory in which you installed PrintMaster 4 or PM7 to the BOOKS subdirectory of the directory in which you installed PM8.
You may want to rename the copy to, say, OLD.ABK. If you have no addresses in your current book in PM8, you may want to remove the blank book you have there and replace with your old one without renaming it (PM uses ADDRESS.ABK as the default book ... but you can have several books and use FILE|OPEN to add/remove entries from various books and while working on a project, use TOOLS|OPEN_ADDRESS_BOOK to change the book you are using to use the entries from a different address book).
====
we upgraded to 8.0. does anyone know how to load our old address lables into 8.0?
----
On the other hand, if you are talking about label templates, go to the project gallery (READY_MADE) and use FILE|IMPORT and browse to where you saved your old label templates and import them. You will have the opportunity to add them to Your_Own listing in PM8 and copy them to the PM8 default save directory. If you saved them in the default location, then whither to browse? To the PROJECTS subdirectory of the USERxxx subdirectory (xxx probably being 000 or 001 depending upon how you have Windows configured) of the directory in which you had installed your old copy of PrintMaster.
If you uninstalled your old version before installing version 8 without backing up your projects, art and address book ... the old templates and address book may be missing (ouch!).

Open up PM8 and go to your address book. Click on File / Import. Import Names Wizard Window should appear click on Next. Type in the path to where you saved the file from your old address book or click on "browse" to locate it. Select "Next". poster etc. and click on Art Gallery, then FILE then Open from disk and click on what I want that's on the disk and it opens into my project and then I can work on it. I might not be explaining it totally right but if I'm not someone else will come onboard and let you know a better way, hope this helps.bettybuggy

9/3/99 5:54:06 PM PST
Hi all,
This is a general chat bulleting board. Correct? IMHO it has become too serious lately. So I present you mathematical proof of the well known Salary Theorem. (P.S. I am sure my friend John (Spamless) will refute it. Ha!)
Maurice
"Salary Theorem" states that "Engineers and scientists can never earn as much as business executives and salespeople."
This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical equation based on the following two postulates:
1. Knowledge is Power.
2. Time is Money.
As every engineer knows: Power = Work / Time. Since Knowledge = Power and Time = Money then Knowledge = Work/Money.
Solving for Money, we get: Money = Work / Knowledge.
Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless of the amount of work done.
Conclusion: The less you know, the more you make.

---
You can create a new field in the default address book, with
field_name, say, TITLE for that.
====
Oooops ... PM's address book already has a field for the TITLE ... just enter that there (and you would add the title as a mail merge field before the name fields to print the title in front of the name). There is ONE extra user_defined_data field you can use for whatever you want. You can use any of the text fields for any data you want (but then remember what you used it for! if you didn't use it for standard stuff). If you create your address book in another programme and save it as comma or tab delimited format and import into PM, you can assign your own field names.

To Mariposa:
... business card workspace... the whole sheet is set to print that one card numerous times... I need the same format with minor changes to each card.
===
If you want the same format with only text changes, you can create a separate address book for the text (you don't have to use *actual* addresses) and do a mail merge. Also, you can use LABELs (more shapes) (and Avery business card stock is in the Label list).
---
If you want control over each card ... you can use STICKERS instead of labels or business cards. This gives access to exactly the same formats (including Avery Business card stock) but instead of giving you one label to work on (which gets repeated with changes you may make with a mail merge), it gives you an entire sheet with each card/label marked separately. That way you can edit each location separately (and if you have common elements, you can put them on one card/label, GROUP those items and copy/paste them to the other labels/cards and just add the changes you want ... to edit the copied items on the other cards/labels, you have to ungroup first).
(NOTE: This is with PM8 -- I assume the same holds for PM7, since it, too, supports stickers).
The only difference between labels/business_card/and stickers that I can see is that:
Stickers give you the full sheet for access (and you can print on sections outside the stickers!). This just gives you a template of a page with the various items marked out. You would have to copy/paste/edit the separate items -- but it DOES give you access to each separate label/card.
Labels will duplicate an item and gives you various choices of label types.
Business cards is like labels, but automatically selects the Avery Business Card template that is in the Labels section.

If you have PM 7+, you can save a panel. Use FILE|EXPORT. Use the arrow next to the formats to change to BMP. Check the number of pixels. To fit your screen, you should probably do a landscape poster. Make sure the option to save ALL items (rather than just selected items) is checked. You will probably want to change the directory in which it is saved and not add it to Your_Own. Choose the number of pixels to fit your screen (e.g. 640x480 for VGA or 800x600 or whatever) (it may stretch the image a bit ... or you can choose a smaller size and leave margins around the wallpaper).

newsletter with graphics/text and then, tried to send it as an attachment ... in the form it created when i saved it.. if i saved it in jpeg format.. it's readable, but somewhat blurry..
---
If you want to send it in its native format (PrintMaster format), your recipient needs PrintMaster and all the fonts and graphics you used (if they have a different version of PrintMaster, they may have different graphics ... you may have used third party graphics and fonts). It can be a large file.
What version of PM have you? You say GOLD. But this can be version 3 or 4 or 8 (or even 7 if you take the title from the embedded info in a project).
In versions 7+ you can use FILE|EXPORT and change the format. You can use the drop down list to choose one and you can choose the number of pixels! (you probably will want to uncheck the box to add to Your_Own and the directory in which it is saved). You can drastically increase the number of pixels to get better looking results. You can choose another format (JPEG is lossy but gives small files which are easier to send... GIF is lossless but only handles 256 colours ... PNG, a new format, is lossless and handles lots of colours, but your recipient may not have a PNG reader: TIFF is lossless, but there are so many variants, your recipient may have trouble viewing it: BMP has no compression ... gigantic files). To get a small file, you have to go with JPEG and you lose resolution (lossy compression) unless you increase the number of pixels dramatically (large file). If you want high resolution, you HAVE to send a large to gigantic file.
If you want them to print the result (not view it), you can do a printer dump. This, too, will be a gigantic file (you need even more resolution!).
The problem is that everything is in picture format, even the text ... the letter "A" in some nice font either takes up a LOT of bytes (to look good) or is blurry if you send a graphic ... Or you can send "A" (the letter ... plain text).
You might want to use a format that sends text as text (e.g. an HTML page) instead of one gigantic picture (or smaller, blurry, picture) and uses the original graphics.
If you have PM4 and use screen capture/paste to get your JPEG, you only get screen resolution (not good enough for a good printout) ... and be sure to set your screen resolution as high as possible before doing the capture if you want better results.
Best way?
PRINT the result. Send them a copy snail mail!

You can create a new field in the default address book, with field_name, say, TITLE for that.
You may find it easier to keep your address book in a better database programme (an excel spreadsheet or any other) where you can copy, cut and paste, etc. If you can export from that database to tab or comma delimited format, you can use that programme to keep your address book and import a comma delimited format into PrintMaster for use there (and there are programmes that do a much better job of handling data than does PM's address book!).

What version?
3? 4? 7? 8? (use HELP|ABOUT)
Classic is a rather crippled version.
There is a HELP file (click on HELP).
You can print out sections from this.
Basically, you use BRAND_NEW and pick a project (if you want to make your own). Then you get an outline of the panel as it will print. You put things on this and arrange them (graphics, text boxes) (you don't put text on a project ... you put a text box and you click in the text box and put the text there). I don't know if CLASSIC has an address_book to let you do mail_merge labels or even if it has any labels! or even if it can use GIF format graphics!
I wouldn't have gotten CLASSIC -- or if you get version 8, SILVER either. If you have Windows 3.x, you can't use versions 7 or 8 ... but you may find an old version of Publishing Suite or Deluxe version 4 around (or Office Suite)... check the sides and/or top or bottom of the box to see if you can find the version number.

It sounds like a different format.
Go to the address book section of AG. Click on the FILE item from its menu bar. See if there is an EXPORT item or SAVE_AS item. If there is and there is an arrow next to the file types, click on that. You may find an option to EXPORT or SAVE_AS tab or comma delimited.
You can do that and then go to PrintMaster's ADDRESS_BOOK section and click on *it's* FILE command from the menu bar and use IMPORT.
Comma and tab delimited are standard formats for simple data lists. PrintMaster can take such a file and convert it into a PrintMaster address book. If you can export or save_as to that format from AG, you can do so and then simply import it into PrintMaster.

Is this a MindScape product, too? Does its bookmark have an *.ABK extension? Then you can copy to the BOOKS subdirectory of the directory in which you installed PrintMaster. Rename it so it doesn't overwrite your ADDRESS.ABK file there (your PrintMaster address book).
Does the AG crafts book allow you to export it in comma or tab delimited format (or is it in some standard format for which there is a programme that does)? Then you can convert it to comma or tab delimited format, go to the PrintMaster ADDRESS_BOOK section and use its menu bar's FILE|IMPORT command.
These give you a NEW address book.
To combine address books is more complicated.
Export both to tab or comma delimited format and use a third party programme to combine them. Then reimport into PrintMaster.
To use another address book in PrintMaster, before you add a mail merge field to a PM project, use TOOLS, and choose to open the new address book. You can have several different ones.

To MARILYN:
how to import address book from another progrm to PM Gold 8.0

You don't.
You can import a tab delimited or comma delimited data file and not into an existing PM address book, but by creating a new one.
Check your other programme and see if it has the option to export the file to tab or comma delimited format. If so, export it (include the field names in the first row). Then open the address book section in PM and use FILE|IMPORT. This will create a new address book. You can go to the address book section and use FILE|OPEN to open a new book, or while working on a project, use TOOLS from the main menu bar and choose to open the new address book. You have to open it! if it has other field names than the defaults.
To combine address books, you can export (FILE|SAVE_AS and use the drop down arrow next to the format) your current PM address book to tab delimited format and the other ... then combine them ... for example, in Excel ... then save that as tab delimited format and reimport it into PrintMaster. The default address book is named ADDRESS.ABK. That and your other PrintMaster format address books are in the BOOKS subdirectory of the directory in which you installed PrintMaster. You can delete address books you no longer need and rename others, etc. Only *.ABK, printmaster format, address books can be used in PrintMaster (so you have to use FILE|IMPORT from the address book section to convert your other data, after getting that in tab or comma delimited format, into PM format).
FILE|SAVE_AS for exporting your PM address book to "standard" formats is not available in version 4 of PrintMaster.

I do that for projects in *all* my print programs now; PM isn't the only program with alignment problems.
Really, I think PM offers the most design control in manipulating graphics, fonts, and working with different project formats. Plus, I really like the graphics that come with the Plat version. When people see my projects they always want to know how I made them and where I got the graphics!
Someday, I'll probably get PM8, and keep both versions on my computer. But I'm not in any hurry :-)
